How to Start a Solar Panel Installation Business

Solar installation is a licensed trade with real barriers to entry, and that is good news for a careful operator. SEIA and Wood Mackenzie forecast a 21 percent residential contraction for 2026, the 30 percent homeowner tax credit died for expenditures after December 31, 2025, and the national brands now pay $0.84 per watt in customer acquisition cost, about $6,888 to sell one 8.2 kW system. That last number is the opening. Every lead that comes off a roofer's job or a neighbor's yard sign is margin the nationals cannot match.

How do you start a solar panel installation business?

Get your state solar or electrical license, buy fall protection and a solar clamp meter, earn the Enphase commissioning authorization, then sell service and reroof work while you log NABCEP project credits.

This trade has a fixed work sequence and you have to be able to run all of it. Lead, site survey, design and plan set, permit to the AHJ, utility interconnection application, install, AHJ inspection, then PTO. File the interconnection application the same day you submit the permit, not after inspection passes, because the utility queue is the long pole and PTO, Permission to Operate, is the green light that lets the system export. Until you have run that loop once end to end, you are not really in business.

  • Pick your legal path. Check whether your state issues a solar specialty license or requires a full electrical contractor license, then confirm the details with your local AHJ, because requirements shift by building department inside a single state.
  • Log the field hours before you chase the certification. NABCEP PV Installation Professional needs 58 hours of approved classroom learning, at least 10 hours of OSHA training, and installations worth 6 project credits, so most people subcontract on other crews first.
  • Register the business and bind a $1M per occurrence general liability policy. That limit is what building owners and roofing partners ask for, and it runs from about $1,164 a year for a solo solar installer.
  • Buy fall protection before anything else. OSHA 29 CFR 1926.501(b)(13) requires conventional fall protection at 6 feet or more in residential construction, and alternatives need a written plan meeting 1926.502(k).
  • Set up design software and learn to produce a real plan set: module layout, string sizing, and the electrical one-line the plan reviewer will actually read.
  • Earn the manufacturer authorizations for the gear you plan to sell. Enphase blocks commissioning in the app if the authorization is missing, so you can finish an install and still not be able to turn it on.
  • Sell your first jobs where the nationals are weak: service calls, reroof removal and reinstall, and battery add-ons.
  • Run one full system yourself, from site survey through AHJ inspection to PTO, before you take on a second.

What does it cost to start a solar panel installation business?

No source publishes a lean total. Built from real line items, a solo start using a truck you already own runs $6,096 to $9,065 for gear, insurance and licensing. A crewed operation models at $538,000.

Be honest about which of the two you are building. The published industry model for an established crewed installer puts $538,000 into capital, including $120,000 of vehicles and $205,000 of installation equipment, then carries $114,500 a month in fixed costs and holds a $349,000 working capital buffer. That is an 11 person company, not a starting point.

Here is the lean version, built from line items instead of a round number. Marcus already owns a work truck. He buys a Fluke 393 FC clamp meter at $729, the 3M roofer's fall protection kit at $801, a 16 ft Werner extension ladder at $229, and a Milwaukee M18 impact driver kit at $269, and runs OpenSolar at $0. Add $1,164 of general liability, $2,272 of commercial auto, $530 for the California C-46 application and two year license, and $102 for the license bond. That is $6,096 to be legal, insured, and able to hand a customer a real commissioning report.

Swap in the Seaward PV150+ kit at $2,499, a 40 ft ladder, a fuller tool set, and the top of the bond band, and the same list runs $9,065. Nobody publishes a verified lean total for this trade, so build yours this way and price the van as a separate decision.

What licenses, certifications and insurance do solar installers need?

Requirements vary by local building department. Eight states including California, Florida and Virginia issue a solar specialty license; most others require an electrical contractor license. NABCEP PV Installation Professional is the recognized certification, plus $1M general liability.

There are three patterns. Arizona, California, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Nevada and Oregon issue a dedicated solar specialty classification. Virginia has one too, called Alternative Energy Systems, covering install and repair from the customer meter downstream. Most other states want a full electrical contractor license: Texas routes it through TDLR and requires you to employ Texas licensed electricians, and North Carolina requires a licensed electrical contractor under NCGS 87-43. South Carolina is different again and runs residential solar through a builder registration with an electrical classification.

The specialty license matters commercially. Where one exists, a solar only shop can install without carrying the full electrical license, which lowers the cost of getting legal. California C-46 still wants 4 years of journey level experience, a business and law exam, a trade exam, fingerprinting, a bond, and workers comp proof or a filed exemption.

Manufacturer certifications are not optional in practice. An installation company must hold an Enphase Storage Installer Authorization before commissioning any Enphase storage system, and an IQ8 Series Solar Installer Authorization for IQ8 Sunlight Backup. At least one experienced installer completes a roughly 4 hour Enphase University course. REC works the same way on warranty: the ProTrust warranty, 25 years of product, performance and labor on systems up to 25 kW, is offered only by REC Certified Solar Professionals, and panels must be registered by the installer.

One warning on California bonding. Published sources disagree on whether the CSLB bond is $15,000 or $25,000. Verify with the board directly before you buy, because the premium difference is real: $102 to $450 a year on the $15,000 bond against $250 to $750 on the $25,000.

How much should you charge for solar installation?

Price per watt. Residential rooftop runs $2.50 to $3.50 per watt installed, with a national average near $2.82. Commercial sits at $1.40 to $1.80 per watt DC because the job scales.

Here is the worked example. Dana has an 8.2 kW roof and you quote $2.90 per watt, so the contract is $23,780. Equipment at 50 percent of price costs you $11,890, install labor at 18 percent costs $4,280, and the building permit runs $278. That leaves $7,332 to cover sales, overhead and profit, which is $0.89 per watt and a 30.8 percent gross margin. That sits inside the 25 to 35 percent the trade runs on in 2026.

Now watch what a loan does to that same job. Solar lenders fund the loan and pay you the balance after a dealer fee that typically runs 20 to 30 percent. Quote Dana $23,780, let a 25 percent fee come out of it, and you collect $17,835, so your $7,332 of margin drops to $1,387. To net the same $23,780 you have to write the loan at $31,707. Carry a cash price and a financed price on every proposal, or the finance channel takes the whole job.

The market median is $2.58 per watt on the EnergySage marketplace and $3.10 per watt in the broader LBNL Tracking the Sun sample. If you are quoting below $2.50 per watt on residential retail, check your equipment line before you sign, because modules and MLPE alone are 45 to 55 percent of the price.

How do you get your first solar customers?

Work the jobs the nationals ignore. Chase reroof removal and reinstall work, service calls on orphaned systems, and battery add-ons, then ask every finished customer for two neighbor referrals.

Run the numbers before you spend a dollar. Wood Mackenzie put installer customer acquisition cost at $0.84 per watt in 2026, up 40 percent year over year, so a national player spends about $6,888 to sell one 8.2 kW system. Ten $300 mail drops across the same 1,000 roofs cost you $3,000, and if that lands a single $23,780 install your acquisition cost is $0.37 per watt, less than half what the brands pay. Land it on the first drop and you are at $0.04.

That gap is your whole structural advantage. The $0.84 per watt CAC now exceeds the entire $0.40 to $0.80 per watt that sales, overhead and margin are supposed to fit inside. Every dollar you do not spend chasing leads is margin the nationals cannot match.

  • Call every roofing contractor within 30 miles. Reroofs on 2010s era arrays force removal and reinstall at $250 to $400 per panel, and roofers need a solar partner who will pull the array on their schedule.
  • Take the orphan service calls. Freedom Forever filed Chapter 11 in April 2026 and left customers with no installer, and those systems still need inverter swaps and monitoring fixes.
  • Sell battery retrofits to homeowners who already have panels. A Powerwall 3 add-on is $13,000 to $16,500 and needs no new roof penetrations.
  • Attach a 200A main panel upgrade at $1,300 to $3,000 or a Level 2 EV charger at $1,200 to $1,800 to every job where the busbar is tight anyway.
  • Line up a third party ownership partner. Section 25D is dead but Section 48E still pays the system owner 30 percent, so a competitor selling a lease prices against a subsidised cost basis and you do not.
  • Put a yard sign on every completed roof and door knock the eight closest houses the same week, while the racking is still visible from the street.

What tools, equipment and software do you need to install solar?

Buy fall protection and a CAT III solar clamp meter first, then ladders, a cordless impact driver, a torque wrench for lag bolts, and design software. Racking and modules are job costs, not startup.

Test gear is what separates a real installer from a handyman with a drill. Residential strings are limited to 600 V DC under NEC 690.7, so a CAT III meter rated to 1500 V DC gives you the headroom to work safely and to read a commercial string later. Pair it with an irradiance meter. Without an irradiance reading you cannot prove a system is producing what you promised, and you will lose an argument with a customer you could have won in ten minutes.

What should you do in your first 90 days?

Spend weeks one and two on licensing and fall protection. Weeks three to six go to manufacturer authorization and design software. Weeks seven to twelve, sell service and reinstall work for cash.

Do not try to sell a full rooftop system in month one. Between plan review and the utility interconnection queue, the money arrives long after the work, and a new business cannot float that. Sell the fast paying work first and let the big installs land in month four.

What mistakes kill new solar installation businesses?

The killers are trade specific. Skipped shading analysis, sealant instead of flashing, ignoring the busbar 120 percent rule, quoting loans without the dealer fee, and selling Enphase work you cannot commission.

Almost none of these are technical mysteries. They are decisions made too fast at the front of the job that surface as a callback or a chargeback months later.

  • Rushing the shading analysis. Partial shading on one module can cut a string 20 to 30 percent without optimizers, and installers who skip the study find 20 to 40 percent output loss after handover. Walk away from sites averaging over 15 to 20 percent annual shading.
  • Getting tilt wrong where you actually control it. On ground mounts and flat roof ballast you choose the angle, and setting 15 degrees where 35 is optimal costs 15 to 20 percent of annual production. On a shingle retrofit you are flush to the roof pitch, so quote the production the roof will really make.
  • Sloppy MC4 terminations. Corroded connectors build resistance and can degrade array output by up to 25 percent over time. Crimp with the die made for that connector, seat until it clicks, and never mate one brand of connector to another.
  • Sealant instead of flashing at roof penetrations. Flashing set above the shingle course instead of under it, lag bolts driven into shingle seams, rails mounted in valleys. It holds for a few light rains, then a storm or a freeze thaw cycle breaks the seal and you own the mold.
  • Not checking the main service panel busbar before you sign. NEC 705.12 says the main breaker plus 125 percent of continuous inverter output cannot exceed 120 percent of the busbar rating, and a mid job panel upgrade or line side tap blows the bid.
  • Designing an array at 34 percent of plan view roof area. At 33 percent or less you get an 18 inch clear setback on both sides of the ridge; cross 33 percent and it becomes 36 inches, which quietly costs you two rows of modules at plan review. A sprinklered house moves the threshold to 66 percent.
  • Writing a production guarantee off a P50 estimate. P50 means a 50 percent chance you underperform the number you guaranteed, and then you pay the shortfall or add panels.
  • Hiring green crews to absorb the May to August backlog. The trade says it plainly: the crew on a roof in June may have three months of experience, and that is why summer installs show more defects.

Is a solar installation business worth it?

Gross margin runs 25 to 35 percent, net 5 to 15, and independents average 22 percent gross against 30 for franchises. Worth it if you sell without paying $0.84 per watt for leads.

You can still build the ceiling out of verified inputs. A 2 to 4 person crew finishes one standard 6 to 10 kW system per day, and the median 8 kW residential job bills $20,600 to $24,800. Call it 150 install days a year after weather, permit waits and slow weeks, and one crew tops out at $3,090,000 to $3,720,000 of revenue. At an independent installer's 22 percent gross margin, that is $679,800 to $818,400 of gross profit before overhead. No source publishes that number, so treat it as arithmetic and not a forecast.

The cost structure behind it is equipment at 45 to 55 percent, labor 15 to 20 percent, sales and marketing 10 to 15 percent, and overhead 10 to 15 percent. Sales plus overhead plus margin is only $0.40 to $0.80 per watt of the price you charge.

Read the 2026 market honestly. US solar installed 7.8 GWdc in Q1 2026, down 27 percent year over year. SEIA and Wood Mackenzie forecast a 21 percent residential contraction for the full year, then a return to growth in 2027 averaging 6 percent a year through 2031. Meanwhile solar and storage supplied over 90 percent of all new US grid capacity in Q1 2026, and BLS projects solar PV installer employment to grow 42 percent from 2024 to 2034.

When is the busy season for solar installation?

Q1 is the trough. March starts peak season as tax refunds fund down payments. May through August is the crunch, with backlogs stretching to six to ten weeks against three to four off peak.

The seasonality is driven by money as much as weather. Tax refund deposits give homeowners the down payment in March, and roof work gets safe again in northern markets around the same time. Q1 2026 installs fell 42 percent from Q4 2025 and residential fell 15 percent quarter over quarter, which SEIA and Wood Mackenzie called typical industry seasonality.

How do you compete with Sunrun and the other national installers?

Sell against their cost structure, not their price. Sunrun has been quoted near $4.75 per watt against a $2.58 to $3.10 median, and carries $0.84 per watt of acquisition cost you do not.

The nationals buy their customers. You earn yours from roofers, referrals and service work, and that gap is worth more than any purchasing advantage they have on modules. Where they beat you is process: end to end service, monitoring, and a brand a homeowner has heard of. Sell the things they cannot fake, which are a named person on the roof, a real site survey, and a phone number that gets answered after PTO.

One thing you cannot ignore is finance. Section 25D, the 30 percent residential credit, terminated for expenditures after December 31, 2025. Section 48E survives for third party owners, at 30 percent and up to 50 percent with adders, on systems placed in service before January 1, 2028 where construction began by July 4, 2026. That construction start date has already passed, so ask any TPO partner which of their projects still qualify before you build a pipeline on it. By March 2026, 55 percent of installers said TPO was their most popular financing option, against 17 percent for loans and 16 percent for cash.

Do you need an electrical license to install solar panels?

In most states, yes. A handful of states including Arizona, California, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Nevada and Oregon issue a solar specialty license instead, which lets a solar only shop work without the full electrical license. Requirements can also change by local building department, so confirm with your AHJ.

How much does NABCEP certification cost?

BLS puts the median wage for solar photovoltaic installers at $53,140 a year, or $25.55 an hour, with the lowest 10 percent under $39,070 and the top 10 percent over $80,150. The field is projected to grow 42 percent from 2024 to 2034, with about 4,100 openings a year.
