How to Start a Smart Home Installation Business

Smart home work is one of the few trades you can enter with a $90 cable tester and still grow into a company doing $900,000 a year. Homeowners buy devices faster than they can install them, and the national brands only do the easy half of the work. This guide covers the real startup costs, state licensing, job prices, first customers, and what the first year actually looks like.

How do you start a smart home installation business step by step?

Start by picking one service line, check your state low voltage rules, register the business, get liability insurance, buy a cable tester and demo kit, price five core jobs, then sell your first install.

  • Pick a lane first. TV mounts, cameras and thermostats bring cash this month. Network drops and prewire pay better and lead to bigger projects.
  • Check your state. California calls it a C-7 for systems up to 91 volts, Minnesota calls it a Power Limited Technician license up to 100 volts, and Indiana has no statewide license at all.
  • Register the business and buy general liability. A solo residential operator can start near $500 a year, and most states expect at least $1 million in coverage.
  • Post a bond if your state requires one. California requires a $25,000 contractor bond, and the premium runs $145 to $225 a year for most contractors.
  • Buy the minimum test gear. A Klein Scout Pro 3 runs about $90 and lets you wiremap, label and hand over a tested drop.
  • Set your rates before the phone rings. Residential low voltage labor runs $60 to $120 an hour, and certified integrators bill $75 to $150.
  • Line up hardware you can defend. Check every camera FCC ID against the FCC Covered List before you put it in a quote.
  • Sell one job and do it perfectly. Ask for a review and a referral before you pull out of the driveway.

How much does it cost to start a smart home installation business?

A lean start using your own vehicle runs under about $1,000 for a tester, a demo mesh kit, insurance and a bond. A van and dealer certification push it past $50,000.

Add up the lines you can actually price today and a solo start is about $865: a $90 Klein Scout Pro 3, a $130 TP-Link Deco X55 demo kit, $500 of general liability, and a $145 bond premium. That figure leaves out hand tools, a ladder, fish tape, crimpers and a label printer, which you still have to buy. Treat $865 as the floor and plan on spending more before your first paid Saturday.

The two big optional costs are the van and the dealer program. Neither one earns money on its own. Buy the van when your car cannot hold a ladder and a spool of Cat6, and buy into Control4 when you have signed work that requires it, not before.

Do you need a license to install smart home systems?

There is no national license. Rules are set state by state, the voltage ceiling changes at every border, burglar and fire alarm almost always sit under a separate license, and Indiana licenses only through city boards.

Notice that the voltage ceiling is not the same anywhere. It is 91 volts in California, 100 volts in Minnesota, and 50 volts in North Carolina and West Virginia. A device you can legally install unlicensed in one state is licensed work one state over. The other trap is the alarm carve-out. Adding one door sensor to a camera job can move you from unlicensed work into work that needs a separate alarm company license, in the same house, on the same afternoon.

  • CEDIA Integrated Systems Technician (IST) is the core credential for this trade. The exam is 150 questions in 3 hours and you need 70 percent to pass. The beta window is September 1 to 30, 2026, at $50, and renewal is a $60 application fee.
  • CEDIA also offers CIT (cabling and infrastructure), RNS (residential networking) and ESC-D. Fees are not published openly, so ask CEDIA directly.
  • The Electronic Security Association runs Certified Alarm Technician Level 1 and 2 and Certified Fire Alarm Technician Level 2, administered with Intertek. ESA says these meet licensing requirements in many states and local jurisdictions.
  • NICET is accepted or required for fire alarm contracting in states like North Carolina.
  • Control4 Certified Technician is 8 courses and 50 hours. The in-person path at ADI Snap One education centers is free to attend.
  • General liability tends to run 0.6 to 1.3 percent of revenue, so a $500,000 operation pays about $3,000 to $6,500 a year.
  • Workers comp for electrical class code 5190 averages about $2.63 per $100 of payroll and ranges from $1.16 to $6.55 by state. Florida sits at $2.97.
  • Tell your underwriter you do residential low voltage, not commercial high voltage. That single line on the application moves the rate.

What should you charge for smart home installation jobs?

Bill $60 to $120 an hour for residential low voltage work and $75 to $150 once you are certified. Most jobs price by the device, the drop or the camera, not by the hour.

Price a camera job the way it actually gets quoted. Dave quotes four cameras on a two story house. Four NDAA compliant cameras at $180 each is $720 in hardware. He adds $150 per camera for mounting and PoE runs, which is $600, plus one $90 drop for the NVR. The quote is $1,410, which lands inside the normal $600 to $1,600 band for a four camera system. The job takes him nine hours, so the $690 of labor works out to about $77 an hour, right in the middle of the residential range.

On commercial work, a drop is priced at $100 to $250 and that price includes termination, labeling and certification testing. If you skip the tester you are giving away work you already charged for. Grouped Cat6 drops have been quoting at $150 to $250 each this year.

Charge for the survey. A $75 to $300 design fee filters out shoppers, pays for your drive time, and gives you the C-wire and transformer answers before you show up with a ladder.

How do you get your first smart home installation customers?

Work the trades already standing in the houses you want. Electricians, builders, realtors and TV shops hand off small jobs. Add a Google Business Profile, real install photos and door hangers in new subdivisions.

Try the flyer math. Ana spends $300 on 2,000 door hangers across two new build subdivisions. Say three homeowners call and two of them book. One is a thermostat swap at $240 that needs a $160 C-wire run, and the other is a TV mount with in-wall concealment at $290. That is $690 of work from a $300 spend, and both households now sit on her list for camera and Wi-Fi work later. One four camera job off that same list bills $1,410, and the labor inside it is worth more than twice the flyer run on its own.

The higher leverage channel is builders. Prewire during construction cuts your labor cost 30 to 40 percent versus retrofit, at the same or a higher price to the customer. One builder doing six houses a year is worth more than a hundred door hangers.

  • Claim your Google Business Profile the first week. Photos of clean rack builds and labeled patch panels outsell stock images every time.
  • Call electricians. They get asked for cameras and thermostats constantly and most of them do not want the work.
  • Ask TV and appliance stores who mounts their televisions. Somebody already does, and that person is either your competitor or your referral partner.
  • Talk to realtors before closings. New owners buy locks, doorbells and cameras in the first month.
  • Post a fixed price menu. Homeowners book faster when a doorbell install is $149 instead of please call for a quote.
  • Offer a support plan. Best Buy sells this at $199.99 a year, which proves people pay for it.
  • Follow up 30 days after every install. That call is where the camera system and the Wi-Fi upgrade come from.

What tools and equipment do you need to install smart home systems?

A cable tester, drill and fish tape, a ladder, a label printer, crimpers and punch down tools, plus a demo mesh kit. Add certification testers and a van once volume justifies them.

  • Klein and Fluke only really overlap in the $100 to $400 basic wiremap band. Fluke is built for people testing dozens or hundreds of cables a day, so buy it when that is you.
  • Plenum spaces need CMP or CL2P marked cable, and plenum rated cable carries a 50 to 70 percent material premium. Price that into the bid, not out of your margin.
  • Carry a spare 16V 30VA or 24V 40VA doorbell transformer. It turns a dead job into a paid upgrade, but the primary side is 120V, so kill the breaker first and check that your low voltage ticket covers touching that junction box.
  • For software, you need quoting and invoicing, a shared calendar, and a cloud folder per client holding as-builts, network passwords, and the make, model, FCC ID and serial of every camera and recorder you install.

What should you do in your first 90 days?

Weeks one and two are paperwork and gear. Weeks three to six are cheap, fast jobs that build reviews. Weeks seven to twelve are trade referrals, network work and your first four figure quote.

Do not spend week one shopping. The gear that lets you take money is a tester, a drill, a fish tape, a ladder and a phone number. Everything else can be bought out of the first ten invoices.

What mistakes kill new smart home installation businesses?

Selling automation before the network, missing a C-wire or an undersized transformer, bidding retrofit at prewire rates, skipping certification testing, and assuming low voltage means no license. Each one costs a free return trip.

  • Selling automation before infrastructure. Thirty smart devices hanging off a consumer ISP gateway guarantees unpaid callbacks. Price the network as its own line at $50 to $100 a port, or $2,500 to $8,000 for a real access point system.
  • Not checking transformer VA and C-wire before the truck rolls. Older homes often have 10VA doorbell transformers, and a video doorbell needs about 20VA regardless of whether it is 16V or 24V. It is the VA rating, not the voltage. A 24V 5VA unit will not work.
  • Assuming low voltage means no license. The voltage threshold, the alarm carve-out, and whether the state regulates at all vary everywhere. Getting it wrong is a stop work order, not a warning.
  • Bidding retrofit labor at prewire rates. Retrofit costs 30 to 50 percent more in labor than open wall work. One rate for both loses money on every retrofit you win.
  • Forgetting hidden line items. Permits at $50 to $400, drywall patching at $200 to $500, and the plenum cable premium are the three that eat a cabling bid.
  • Leaving abandoned cable in the ceiling. Accessible abandoned Class 2, Class 3 and PLTC cable must be removed or tagged durably for future use. In the 2026 NEC those cable rules moved to Article 722. Citing it by number in front of an inspector signals you are current.
  • Buying cameras on price without checking the FCC ID. Covered manufacturers sell through dozens of OEM brand names, and the 2026 import ban now reaches older models too. Cross-reference every FCC ID against the FCC Covered List.
  • Skipping certification testing on drops. Per drop pricing at $100 to $250 already includes termination, labeling and testing. Testers start at $23 to $90, so there is no excuse.
  • Over-buying test gear on day one. The Fluke MicroScanner2 kit is about $1,127 and it is aimed at specialists testing hundreds of cables daily.
  • Specifying border routers without checking Thread version. Thread 1.3 applications stopped being accepted on January 1, 2026, and Matter now requires border routers to be certified for Thread 1.4.

Is a smart home installation business worth starting?

Yes, if you sell infrastructure and service, not just device installs. The median US integrator does $900,000 a year with five people and about 30 projects. Solo work pays well but scales slowly.

Run your own first year math instead of trusting a headline number. A solo tech billing 20 paid hours a week at $85 an hour is $1,700 a week, and 48 working weeks makes $81,600 of labor. One four camera job a month adds $720 of hardware billed through, not extra labor, because those nine install hours already sit inside the 20. That is $90,240 of top line before parts, insurance, fuel and the van.

The mature end of this trade looks different. US custom integration is about a $29 billion market with roughly 20,000 companies. The median integrator books $900,000 a year across about 30 projects with 5 employees, which is roughly $30,000 of revenue per project. Forty-five percent of integrators sit in the $500,000 to $2 million range, so that is the realistic target for a crew of four or five.

The margin lever that matters most is prewire. Pulling cable while the walls are open cuts your labor 30 to 40 percent at the same price to the customer. Builder relationships are the highest margin channel in this trade, and recurring support plans, priced the way Best Buy prices its $199.99 a year plan, are what smooth out the slow months.

When is the busy season for smart home installers?

This trade has two peaks. Summer is peak season for alarm and low voltage work, and installation volume peaks again in December, with demand staying strong into the new year.

Two peaks is an advantage. Summer security work and December gifting sit half a year apart, so the book refills before cash gets tight. The mistake is staffing for the December spike and being underbooked in summer, when alarm and low voltage work is actually strongest.

Do not fight them on single device installs. They anchor at $99 to $249 and discount installation to sell monitoring. You win on prewire, structured cabling, rack builds, multi camera PoE systems and programming.

The nationals discount installation on purpose. It is a customer acquisition cost against $24.99 to $59.99 a month of monitoring, so you cannot out-price a loss leader. Sell what they do not: prewire in new construction, Cat6 drops with certification testing, multi camera PoE systems with a real NVR, whole home Wi-Fi at $2,500 to $8,000, and programming that actually gets handed over with documentation.
