How to Start a Security Camera Installation Business
Security cameras are one of the few trades where a careful person with a ladder and a cable tester can bill $125 to $450 per camera by the third job. The work is low voltage, so most of the job is planning, pulling cable and testing, not electrical risk. This guide covers what it costs to start, what to charge, the license your state may demand, and what the first year actually pays.
How do you start a security camera installation business from zero to your first paying job?
Pick a lane, get the license your state requires, buy a small tool kit and a test monitor, insure the work, then install two systems at cost for referrals.
- Pick your lane first. Residential PoE systems, small commercial retail and restaurants, or service work on systems other people installed. Camera-only work with no monitoring contract is the easiest lane to enter.
- Check your state rule before you spend a dollar. In Texas it is a crime to contract camera installs without a Private Security Bureau license. California needs a C-7 Low Voltage Systems contractor license. Ohio and Alaska require no state license.
- Register the entity before you apply for anything. Texas issues the company license to the business and Georgia issues the low voltage license to the business entity through a qualifying agent, not to you personally.
- Bind general liability and errors and omissions insurance. A camera that did not record is a professional failure, and general liability was not built to cover that.
- Buy the core kit, about $1,075. A pass-through RJ45 crimper, a cable tester with map remotes, a CCTV test monitor, a steel fish tape, a hammer drill and a 22 ft Type IAA multi-position ladder.
- Stock one demo system. An 8-channel 4K PoE NVR kit with a 2TB drive and eight 8MP outdoor domes runs about $859 and doubles as a rolling showroom.
- Install two systems near cost for friends or a neighborhood business. Photograph every cable run, test at night, and ask for a Google review the day you hand over the app.
- Price the third job at market. Quote $125 to $450 per camera installed, and build the number off cable runs and retention days, not off camera count.

What licenses, certifications and insurance do you need to install security cameras?
It depends entirely on your state. Texas, California, Florida, Virginia and several others require a license. Ohio, Alaska and Colorado do not. Budget for general liability plus errors and omissions insurance everywhere.
Requirements vary enormously by state, and in several states by city. Some states leave it almost entirely to local jurisdictions. Texas and New York use a hybrid of state and local rules. Call the state board yourself before you quote anything, because the fee pages change and a stale number is worse than no number.
One 2026 correction that trips people up. NICET no longer tests Video Security Systems. It stopped offering that exam after December 31, 2023, and anyone selling you a Video Security Systems Level II prep course is selling a certification you cannot sit for. Existing certificate holders can still recertify, and NICET fees still run $230 at Level I to $425 at Level IV, which matters only if you add fire alarm work. For camera-only work the gate is your state contractor or alarm license.
- General liability runs about $480 to $2,200 a year. A clean loss history and small payroll sit near the bottom, where many one-person shops pay $40 to $75 a month.
- Errors and omissions averages about $88 a month, roughly $1,056 a year. This is the trade-specific one. A missed alert or a camera that did not record is a professional failure, not property damage.
- Workers compensation for this trade uses class code 7605, burglar and fire alarm installation or repair.
- A license or permit bond, where your state requires it, usually runs $100 to $500 a year with decent credit. A $25,000 California contractor bond runs about $145 to $225 a year.
- Commercial auto, because your ladders, testers and camera stock ride in that van between jobs.
- Security and alarm contractors pay more than structured cabling or A/V contractors, so expect to sit at the higher end of any low voltage insurance quote.

How much should you charge for security camera installation?
Residential cameras run $125 to $450 each installed, all in. Commercial labor alone is $150 to $300 per camera. Quote by cable run and retention days, not by camera count.
Worked example. Maria quotes a six-camera job on a 1990s two-story house. She prices at $325 per camera installed, so the ticket is $1,950. Hardware is about $700 for six 8MP PoE domes and an 8-channel 4K NVR with a 2TB drive, which tracks against the $859 eight-camera kit from the same distributor. She pulls roughly 600 ft of riser Cat6 out of a $42 box, so $25, plus $40 in connectors, mounts and weather boots. Materials are $765. Twelve hours of tech time at the $25.37 trade average is $304, so cost is $1,069 and gross margin is 45 percent. That beats the 25 to 38 percent install benchmark only because nothing in it carries overhead yet: no shop, no truck payment, no unbilled drive time.
The trap that costs beginners money is quoting by camera count. A 12-camera system with all new cabling, 90-day retention and license plate capture at the gate can cost more than a 20-camera system in a building that is already wired. Walk the site, count the runs, ask how many days of video they need to keep, then price. Add recurring revenue to every proposal: residential maintenance plans run $200 to $500 a year, commercial plans run $1,000 to $5,000, and a common rule is 10 to 15 percent of the original install value annually.

How do you get your first security camera customers?
Start with people who already trust you, then own your local map. A Google Business Profile, yard signs, one flyer drop and knocking on the businesses beside every job you finish.
Worked example on a $300 flyer run. Drop flyers in one subdivision and print a dedicated phone number on them so you can actually attribute the calls. If that $300 produces two installs at the $1,296 market average for a complete system, that is $2,592 of revenue. Hardware and cable on two four-camera jobs runs about $500 each against the $859 eight-camera kit price, so call it $1,000. Subtract the $300 in flyers and you keep $1,292 for two days of your own labor, with marketing at 11.6 percent of revenue. Break-even is one call that closes, which is why a flyer drop a month survives the budget and a $3,000 ad buy in month one does not.
- Set up a Google Business Profile the week you register. Post photos of finished installs, and ask for a review while you are still standing in the driveway showing them the app.
- Walk the block after every job. A camera install is visible, and the neighbors on both sides just watched a van and a ladder work all day.
- Knock the businesses beside every commercial job. Strip malls buy in clusters, because one break-in scares the whole row.
- Partner with electricians, IT shops and alarm dealers who do not want to climb. They send camera work out constantly.
- Call property managers and HOA boards. They own many buildings and one relationship turns into a route.
- Chase the rip and replace work. Owners with Hikvision or Dahua hardware cannot bid federal or federally funded work, and after the late 2025 and early 2026 FCC enforcement push they are also struggling to source replacement parts.
- Wrap the van and use yard signs. Both are cheap and both work in the exact neighborhoods you want.
- Quote in person, on site, with the test monitor in hand. Showing them the actual field of view from the mount point closes jobs that a PDF never will.
What tools, equipment and software do you need to install security cameras?

The CCTV test monitor is the tool that separates a camera installer from a network cabler. It powers the camera off its own PoE port and shows you the picture at the mount point, so you set the field of view and check for IR bounce before you climb down. Terminate and test every run with the cable tester before a single camera goes on the wall, too. Finding a bad crimp from the top of the ladder with a dome already anchored costs you the afternoon. Buy the $190 test monitor before you buy the second drill.
- A quoting tool that itemizes cameras, cable and labor on separate lines, so the customer can see what they are paying for.
- A shared photo folder. Photograph every cable run before the ceiling tile or drywall goes back, and photograph the rack before you leave.
- A password manager for recorder and app credentials. You will be holding dozens of them within a year.
- A calendar that reminds you before every maintenance plan visit, because renewals only stay easy if you show up first.

What mistakes kill new security camera installation businesses?
The killers are trade specific. Never testing at night, mounting under an eave so IR bounces back, sizing a PoE switch by port watts, and bidding riser cable into a plenum.
PoE budget, worked. Sixteen 8MP domes with IR can each pull the full 30W an 802.3at port allows, which is 480W. A switch with a 370W budget carries twelve of them, so four cameras start dropping the first cold night when IR and heaters come on together. That failure lands in December, on a $10,000 to $25,000 sixteen-camera commercial job, and nobody will care that it passed commissioning in August. Size the switch to the winter draw and buy the 740W supply.
- Not testing at night. Most IR problems only show up after dark, which is exactly when the installer has already gone home. Test the mount in daylight and in low light before you call the job complete.
- Mounting cameras before you test the runs. Terminate every drop, tester on both ends, then mount. A bad crimp found from the ladder with the dome already anchored and sealed is an hour you do not get paid for.
- IR glare off eaves and overhangs. If the eave is in the camera field of view it reflects the IR LEDs straight back into the lens. Objects do not even have to be in frame, only close enough to bounce light.
- Pointing a camera into the sun. A camera aimed at a setting sun or a bright streetlight washes out completely. Check the sun path at different hours before you drill.
- Sloppy cable inside the dome. In multi-sensor housings, wires near the dome cover reflect IR back into the lens. Keep them behind the sensors.
- Wrong mounting height. Too high and you record the tops of heads with no usable detail. Too low and it gets blocked or tampered with. Keep it 8 to 12 feet.
- Unsealed cable entries. Water gets in and the recording fails on exactly the night the customer needed it.
- Sizing the PoE switch by per-port wattage. A switch has two limits: the per-port maximum set by the standard and the total power budget set by its supply. An 802.3at switch does 30W a port, but the total budget is typically 370W or 740W and only reaches 1,440W on the largest supply option. Cameras with IR and heaters draw far more in December than they did on the bench in August.
- Bidding riser cable into a return-air plenum. The drop ceiling in a retail store is often a plenum, and Class 2 cable there must be plenum rated or in metallic raceway. CMR bulk Cat6 starts around $42 per 1000 ft against $357 for solid copper CMP, so guessing wrong either loses the bid or eats the whole margin.
- Assuming no license is needed because it is just cameras. In Texas, network video fits the statutory definition of an alarm system, and contracting without a license is a crime.
- Leaving the microphone on in an all-party consent state. Eleven states require it: California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Washington. Many IP cameras ship with the mic enabled.
- Selling rebadged Hikvision or Dahua hardware without checking who actually made it. Section 889 covers subsidiaries and affiliates, and a lot of white-label brands are covered gear in a different box.
- Building the business on hardware margin. 84 percent of integrators report 30 percent or less on hardware and 36 percent report 20 percent or less, while labor profit averages 55 percent.
Is a security camera installation business actually worth it?
Yes, if you sell labor and service instead of boxes. A solo first year runs $150,000 to $250,000 with $54,000 to $96,000 net. Five to eight techs reach $1 million.
Worked example on the first year. Say you install 90 systems at an average $1,700 ticket. That is $153,000, the bottom of the sourced solo range. Note the pace: 90 installs is under two a week, not the 3 to 5 a week the ladder above assumes, because a first year is mostly ramp. At a 36 percent net you keep $55,080, which sits at the bottom of the $54,000 to $96,000 range, and that number is your pay, not profit on top of a salary. Add 40 residential maintenance plans at $350, which is $14,000 of recurring revenue at 60 to 80 percent margin, so about $9,800 of profit for a handful of service trips.
Read the margins the way the industry does. Install gross margin benchmarks land at 25 to 38 percent. Service runs 50 to 65 percent. Recurring revenue runs 60 to 80 percent, and recurring is now 38.5 percent of total industry revenue, up from 33 percent two years earlier. Labor profit averages 55 percent against 43 percent on equipment. An owner-operator makes money on labor and service, not on reselling boxes. Suggested pricing margins are 35 to 50 percent residential and 25 to 40 percent commercial, with overhead at 30 to 40 percent. The market is forecast to grow from $6.8 billion in 2025 to $10.9 billion by 2030.

When is the busy season for security camera installation?
Residential demand is bimodal. June is the single biggest burglary month at 11.3 percent of cases, and December sets the property crime record. Commercial work fills the slow first quarter.
Demand tracks property crime, and property crime in the United States has two peaks. More burglaries happen in June than any other month, 11.3 percent of all reported cases, and FBI figures show burglary up about 11 percent across July and August as families travel. Then December takes over. For three years running December has recorded the highest property crime of any month, with 66,676 offenses in December 2024, a 10.8 percent jump from November. Nearly 80 million people traveled 50 miles or more for Thanksgiving 2024, and porch packages stack up in the dark. Sell against the calendar, not against fear.

How do you compete with ADT, Vivint and cloud camera companies?
You do not beat ADT on price. You beat them on no monthly fee. Vivint charges $4.99 a month per extra camera, while your local recorder charges nothing forever.
Then run the other play on the commercial side. Recurring revenue carries a 60 to 80 percent gross margin against 25 to 38 percent on the install, so reselling third-party video monitoring on top of your own hardware is the highest-margin line you can add. Resold monitoring runs $30 to $150 a month per camera for basic service and $100 to $500 a month per camera for premium 24 hour coverage. Sell the no-monthly-fee system to homeowners who want to own their footage, and sell monitoring to the commercial accounts that want somebody watching at 2am.

Do I need an electrician license to install security cameras?
Usually no. Camera work is low voltage, so most states regulate it under a low voltage or alarm license instead. California uses the C-7, Nevada the C-2d, and Texas requires a Private Security Bureau license. Ohio and Alaska require no state license at all.
How much can I make in my first year installing security cameras?

Should I install IP PoE systems or HD over coax?

What is NDAA compliance and why does it matter for camera work?
Section 889 covers Huawei, ZTE, Hytera, Hikvision and Dahua plus their subsidiaries and affiliates. If you cannot say whether a camera is compliant, you cannot bid schools, cities, ports, utilities or any federally funded job.
Can I record audio along with the video?
Only carefully. Eleven states require all-party consent, including California, Florida, Illinois and Washington, and many IP cameras ship with the microphone enabled by default. Disable it at install in those states and put that in writing on the handover sheet.
