How to Start a Home Theater Installation Business

Home theater work is one of the few trades where you can start for a few thousand dollars, because the client buys the gear and you sell the design and the labor. About 20,000 integration companies split a $29 billion US market, and most of them are tiny. Below is what it costs to open, what to charge per job, how to book the first ten, and where revenue flattens if you stay one person in a car.

How do you start a home theater installation business from zero to your first paying job?

Start by picking two or three services you can do well, get insured, buy a tester and a stud finder, then book paid jobs through neighbors, realtors, and local Facebook groups.

The fastest path in is TV mounting with hidden wires. It is a two hour job, the tools are cheap, and the customer already knows what it should cost. You use those jobs to learn houses: stud spacing, plaster walls, brick fireplaces, where the power is. Then you add surround sound, in-ceiling speakers, projectors, and finally prewire for builders, which is where the repeat money lives.

Do not wait for a van or a brushless drill to take the first job. Most people in this trade start with the car they already own, a $99 tester, and a ladder in the back seat. Do not skip the license check, though. In California, Florida, Georgia, or Washington you cannot legally contract low-voltage work without the state credential, and plenty of towns want a permit for an in-wall run either way.

  • Pick your first three services. TV mounting with in-wall concealment, in-ceiling speakers, and 5.1 surround setup cover most first-year calls.
  • Register the business and get general liability insurance. Budget $500 to $1,500 for the first year of a $1 million policy.
  • Check your state. California, Florida, Georgia, Washington, Oregon, Minnesota, Nebraska, Virginia, and North Carolina all license low-voltage work under different names.
  • Buy the core kit only: Scout Pro 3 tester $100, ProSensor 710 stud finder $53, M18 drill and impact combo $199, Little Giant ladder $179. That is $531, before fish tape, glow rods, and hole saws.
  • Set flat prices for the five jobs you will sell most, and bill everything else inside the $85 to $150 an hour band AV integrators actually charge.
  • Get a Google Business Profile live with real photos of finished walls, not stock images. Ask every customer for a review the same day.
  • Book the first ten jobs from people within five miles. Neighbors, realtors, movers, furniture and TV stores, and neighborhood groups.
  • Take the CEDIA CIT exam once you have a few months in. It is $200 for non-members and $150 for members, and it is ANSI accredited.

What does it cost to start a home theater installation business?

A lean owner-operator start runs about $3,500 to $4,000: website, insurance, marketing, and core tools. A licensed setup with a new Transit 250 and commercial auto runs about $55,300 to $56,800.

The reason this trade is cheap to enter is that you do not carry inventory. The client buys the TV, the receiver, and the speakers, or you order them per job. What you actually fund is a $500 website, $500 of general liability, about $2,000 of marketing, and $531 of tools: the Scout Pro 3 at $99.98, the ProSensor 710 at $52.95, the M18 combo at $199, and a Little Giant at $179. That is $3,531, call it $4,000 once you add fish tape, glow rods, and hole saws.

The jump from lean to established is almost entirely the van. A new 2026 Ford Transit 250 low roof lists at $49,400, and the actual average paid on a Transit Cargo has been running near $47,640. Add commercial auto at about $260 a month, which is $3,120 a year, plus $1,000 of California C-7 filing fees, and that $3,531 becomes $55,291 before you turn a wrench. Push the liability policy to $1,500 and the filing to $1,500 and it is $56,791.

What licenses, certifications, and insurance do you need?

There is no national license. States like California, Florida, Georgia, and Washington license low-voltage work, and many towns require a permit for in-wall runs. Carry general liability at $500 to $1,500 a year.

Requirements vary enormously by state. One tracker compares low-voltage technician rules across 49 of 51 US jurisdictions, which is the whole point: most states have something, but the scope, the issuing board, and whether audio video work is even covered all differ. Call your state board and your local building department before you quote in-wall work.

California is the best documented example. The C-7 Low Voltage Systems Contractor license covers communication, sound, and signal systems at 91 volts or less. The application fee is $450, the initial license fee is $200 for a sole owner or $350 otherwise, Live Scan fingerprinting is $70 to $90, and a $25,000 contractor bond is required. All in, state filing costs run $1,000 to $1,500.

Certification is separate from licensing. CEDIA is the trade body, and its ladder is CIT, IST, RNS, and ESC-D. The entry-level CIT (Cabling and Infrastructure Technician) exam is $200 non-member or $150 member, is valid three years, and renews with one approved course rather than 30 CEUs. An updated IST exam runs as a beta from September 1 to 30, 2026, with registration opening August 10, 2026, at $50 for beta takers. Control4, Savant, and Crestron dealer programs are their own thing and gate whether you can buy those brands at all.

  • General liability, $1 million: $500 to $1,500 a year for a one-person shop. Often cheaper bundled into a BOP.
  • Commercial auto: about $260 a month for contractors on average, roughly $3,120 a year.
  • Workers comp, only once you hire: electrical class code 5190 runs about $2.63 per $100 of payroll, with a state spread of $1.16 to $6.55. One $50,000 employee adds roughly $750 to $2,000 a year.
  • Bonding: California requires a $25,000 contractor bond. You pay an annual premium to a surety, not the face amount.
  • Also common: professional liability, and property coverage for the tools in your vehicle.

What should you charge for home theater installation work?

Most installers bill $50 to $150 an hour, or flat rates by job. A basic TV mount runs $99 to $299, surround sound averages $795, and a projector system averages $2,500.

Price the job, not the line. The industry rule is a 35 to 45 percent blended gross margin across the whole job, because commodity items like cable, mounts, and connectors carry 40 to 60 percent markup while big-ticket gear like displays and amps only carries 25 to 35 percent. Margin every line the same way and you either lose the bid or lose the money.

Here is real math. Devon quotes a 1990s subdivision living room: 65-inch TV on a stud wall, wires hidden, 5.1 surround added. He prices $299 for the mount, $150 for in-wall concealment, and $795 for the surround install, so labor is $1,244. He supplies the full-motion mount, a recessed in-wall power kit, and CL3 speaker wire at $700 on $500 of dealer cost, the 40 percent markup commodity items carry. The invoice is $1,944. The job takes 8 hours, so the labor line alone is $155 an hour.

Rush and deadline work prices higher. Nobody negotiates hard on the Thursday before the Super Bowl.

How do you get your first customers?

Work the two markets that already exist: people who just bought a TV and builders who need prewire. Realtors, movers, furniture stores, and neighborhood groups send more work than paid leads do.

Run the numbers before you spend. A $300 flyer drop across a 1,500 home subdivision costs you about 20 cents a door. If just two homeowners call and each books a $299 mount plus $150 concealment, that is $898 of work off a $300 spend. If nobody calls, you are out $300 and a Saturday. That is why you drop flyers the week after Black Friday and in late January, not in March.

Paid lead platforms will take the business if you let them. Angi, HomeAdvisor, and Thumbtack are marketplaces, not installers, and they set the price the customer expects before you ever speak. Operators say the shared-lead fee cycle kills their margins. Use them to fill a dead week, never as the pipeline.

The highest-value relationship in this trade is a custom builder. Prewire follows framing in spring and summer, and trim-out lands 2 to 6 months later, so one builder account gives you two visits per house and a schedule you can plan around.

  • Get on the list at local TV and furniture stores. Every 85-inch TV they sell is a mount job with hidden wires.
  • Call realtors and moving companies. Sellers want the TV off the wall and the holes patched, buyers want it back up.
  • Post finished-wall photos in neighborhood groups. Clean cable work sells this trade better than any ad copy.
  • Knock on the framers. Ask builders for one house as a test prewire and price it per drop.
  • Quote CEDIA/CTA-RP22 in proposals for immersive audio jobs. It is how you stop sounding like a mounting service.
  • Ask for the review before you leave the driveway, while the room still looks new to them.

What tools, equipment, and software do you need?

You need a cable tester, a 13-sensor stud finder, a drill and impact kit, a multi-position ladder, fish tape, and glow rods. Those first four run $531; fish tape, glow rods, and hole saws are on top.

Buy the tester first. Testing and labeling every drop before the drywall closes is the difference between a callback and a referral, and a cable tester is the cheapest insurance in the truck.

A 13-sensor stud finder pays for itself the first time you avoid a hole in the wrong spot. Anything cheaper will lie to you on plaster and on double studs.

  • Also needed and cheap: fish tape, glow rods, hole saws, drywall saw, tone and probe kit, mud rings, and a label printer.
  • Cable stock: CL2 or CL3 rated speaker wire, Cat6 or Cat6A, and coax. A cable without a CL2, CL3, or UL listing printed on the jacket is a shelf-to-device cable only.
  • Carry active optical HDMI for any run over about 25 feet, and check the source and display ends before you pull it.
  • Software: a system design and proposal tool like D-Tools, a scheduling and invoicing app, and cloud storage for as-built photos of every wall before you close it.

What should you do in the first 90 days?

Weeks one and two: insurance, tools, and pricing. Weeks three to six: land ten paid jobs and collect reviews. Weeks seven to twelve: add a second service and one builder account.

  • Track two numbers only in the first 90 days: jobs closed per week and average ticket. Everything else is noise.
  • Do not buy a van in the first 90 days. Prove the calendar fills first.

What mistakes kill new home theater installation businesses?

The killers are hanging a TV on drywall anchors, running a power cord inside a wall, using passive HDMI on long runs, and living on paid lead platforms that eat your margin.

  • Mounting to drywall anchors instead of framing. Hit at least two full-depth studs, ideally three, with lag screws of at least 1/4 inch by 3 inch. Drywall will not hold a 100-inch TV even with toggle bolts. Most mount failures are installation errors, and Samsung, LG, and Sony all exclude improper installation from warranty.
  • Putting the TV power cord in the wall. It violates the National Electrical Code, because flexible cords are not rated for permanent concealment, and an insurance claim can be denied if a fire starts in that wall. Use a recessed in-wall power kit.
  • Running passive HDMI 2.1 past about 10 feet. Full 48 Gbps holds to roughly 3 meters passive, about 25 feet with active copper, and 50 to 300 feet with active optical. AOC cables are directional, and one installed backwards after the drywall closes is a rip-out.
  • Buying gear before designing the room. It is the single biggest mistake in this trade, right next to skipping the wiring and conduit plan.
  • Mounting the screen too high, or sizing it wrong. Screen width should be about one third of the seating distance, and viewing distance runs 1.5 to 2.5 times the diagonal.
  • Missing the Dolby overhead angle. Dolby specifies 45 degrees of elevation from the main seat to Atmos height speakers, with 30 to 55 acceptable. A wrong ceiling cut-out is a drywall repair, not an adjustment.
  • Corner-loading the subwoofer by default. It gets you output and hides an under-spec sub, and it usually sounds boomy.
  • No ventilation plan for the rack and no surge strategy. Heat kills receivers and amps.
  • Leaving the client with four remotes. That is the number one source of the system does not work callbacks.
  • Pricing per line instead of per job, and living on shared lead fees. Both quietly delete the 35 to 45 percent margin you needed.

Is a home theater installation business worth it?

Yes, if you can sell. One full-time installer should produce $70,000 to $100,000 a year at a 35 to 45 percent blended gross margin. Owner plus three techs reaches $200,000 to $400,000.

Here is a realistic first year. A solo installer doing two jobs a day, four days a week, forty-eight weeks a year, runs 384 jobs. At a $220 average ticket, the low middle of the $158 to $360 national mount range, that is $84,480. Swap 40 of those mounts for 40 surround installs at $795 and the same calendar produces $107,480, which lands in the $100,000 to $120,000 range where a second van and a full-time tech start to pay.

Reported integrator margins run around 48 percent overall project margin, about 43 percent on equipment and 55 percent on labor. That is why the mix matters more than the volume. Ten labor-heavy jobs beat fifteen box-pushing jobs every time.

The ceiling is real. The industry is overwhelmingly small: very few integration firms pass 50 employees, and a large share report under $1 million in annual revenue. Owner plus one to three techs lands around $200,000 to $400,000. Crossing $1 million takes an actual operations layer, not more hours.

  • Solo owner-operator, year one: $70,000 to $100,000 revenue is the honest band.
  • Add a tech at $100,000 to $120,000 in annual revenue, not before.
  • Median wage for broadcast, sound, and video technicians was $56,600 in May 2024, which is the number your hires compare your offer against.
  • High performers exist. One TV mounting operator reports about $30,000 a month, built on volume and speed, not on theater rooms.

When is the busy season for home theater installers?

November is the busiest month because of Black Friday TV sales. The Super Bowl run-up is second. Summer brings moving season, and late February through April is the slow stretch.

Every discounted TV sold in November becomes a possible install in the days after. Black Friday has stretched from one day to most of a month, and it sometimes starts in late October. Super Bowl season is the second-best TV buying window of the year, deals peak about two weeks before the game at around 23 percent off big screens, and 17 percent of Americans upgraded their TV ahead of the 2020 game. That deadline is why rush pricing works in January.

New construction runs on its own clock. Builders ramp up March through May and get backlogged in summer, so prewire follows framing in spring and summer and trim-out lands 2 to 6 months later, in fall and winter. Booked correctly, builder trim-out fills the same months as retail mounting demand.

How do you compete with Geek Squad and the on-demand apps?

You will not beat Geek Squad or Puls on a $99 mount. Win on the work they will not do: in-wall runs, Atmos layouts, prewire, and calibration that needs a real design.

There is no national franchise in this trade. Your competition is a low end of retailer service arms and on-demand networks, and a high end of roughly 20,000 independent integrators in the CEDIA channel. The gap in the middle is where a good one-person shop makes money: jobs too custom for a flat-rate app and too small for a Control4 dealer whose entry systems start at $5,000.
