What licenses, certifications and insurance do you need?

No state licenses countertop installers by name. The work sits under a contractor classification such as California's C-6 Cabinet, Millwork and Finish Carpentry. Budget $768 to $1,560 yearly for general liability.

Start with the honest framing: there is no countertop installer license in the United States, and there is no countertop installer certification that any customer will ask for. The work sits inside a broader contractor classification, and which one depends on your state and sometimes on the material. California is the most regulated example, and its C-6 Cabinet, Millwork and Finish Carpentry classification explicitly covers fabrication and installation of countertops alongside cabinets and finish carpentry. Whether stone-specific work instead belongs under C-29 Masonry or C-54 Ceramic and Mosaic Tile is worth a phone call to the CSLB before you apply.

California costs are a useful benchmark even if you live elsewhere. The CSLB application fee is $450 and the initial license fee is $200 for a sole owner or $350 otherwise. You need a $25,000 contractor bond, though the premium you actually pay a surety is a fraction of that and depends on your credit. You take a two-part exam covering Law and Business plus the Trade, submit Live Scan fingerprints to the DOJ and FBI, and either carry workers comp or file an exemption. The C-6 also requires four years of journeyperson, foreperson or supervisory experience within the last ten years, which is the real gate.

Thresholds vary wildly. California triggers at $1,000 combined labor and materials. Arizona requires a Registrar of Contractors license for virtually all residential and commercial work with no meaningful exemption. Nevada licenses statewide with three classes by project size. Texas has no state general contractor license at all, but Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Austin each impose their own requirements, so working several metros means three or more separate registrations.

On insurance, the numbers are friendlier than most trades. The mistake that kills new installers is quoting a homeowner the subcontract labor number and then discovering the slab, fabrication and delivery have to come out of it.

Worked example, and the arithmetic matters more than the price: Dana quotes a 48 square foot quartz kitchen at $85 per square foot installed, which is $4,080. She adds a second sink cutout at $200 and demolition and haul-away of the old tops at $150, so the contract is $4,430. Her fabricator charges $2,050 for the slab and edge work, which is $42.71 per square foot. The template trip plus the set day is 1.5 crew days at $450, and adhesive, shims and support brackets run $120. Worked example on small work: a 12 square foot vanity top at $70 per square foot installed is $840. A template stop and a half-day set still burns a full crew day at $450 plus $60 in fuel and adhesive, so $510 of direct cost leaves $330. The add-ons are where the rest of the margin lives. An extra sink cutout is $150 to $300. Demolition and haul-away adds $50 to $200. Each kitchen costs you about 1.5 crew days plus consumables, roughly $755, so that shop leaves about $3,135 of gross profit a month for four and a half crew days of work. Two more partners like that and you are booked without spending a dollar on advertising.

Worked example on fabricator overflow: a fabricator with more slabs cut than crews to set them will sub at wholesale, call it $35 per square foot. The same 45 square foot kitchen bills $1,575 and leaves about $820 after the crew day and consumables. Lower rate, but zero selling cost and they call weekly, which is exactly what a calendar with holes in it needs.

Do the physical work too. Ask every fabricator within 45 minutes whether they need overflow install crews, because that is a phone call, not a pitch. Photograph every finished kitchen with raking light across the seam, since a seam that disappears is the one thing another installer and a picky homeowner both recognize. Claim your Google Business Profile and post seam and overhang shots weekly. And haul the old tops away and vacuum the site, because in remodeling the referral is the product.

What tools, equipment and software does a countertop installer need?

Handling gear first: an all-terrain slab cart, scissor and two-person lifters, seam setters, a variable speed wet polisher, and a dust-shrouded saw. Luan and hot glue template until digital pays.

Buy handling gear before you buy anything that cuts. A slab that breaks in a driveway costs more than the tool that would have saved it. Software is simple at the start: a quoting sheet priced per square foot with separate lines for cutouts, edges and demo, a calendar, an invoicing app, and a shared photo folder. What matters more than any app is a written slab-approval step, where the customer signs off on the exact slab and the seam locations before anything is cut.

What should the first 90 days look like?

What mistakes kill new countertop installation businesses?

Bad templates, unsupported overhangs, carrying slabs flat, treating the silica rule as paperwork, quotes with no expiration while slab prices move, and builder volume priced below what a truck costs.

  • Sloppy templating. The Natural Stone Institute tolerance for a countertop joint against a full-height backsplash is plus or minus 1/8 inch. Miss it and you are eating a recut slab, not explaining a gap.
  • Unsupported overhangs. Three centimeter granite carries 8 to 10 inches unsupported, up to 12 on harder and denser stone, while 2 cm needs support past 6 inches. Brackets belong 18 to 24 inches on center, set 2 to 3 inches back from the front edge, and unsupported overhang should never exceed one third of total counter depth.
  • Guessing where an engineer belongs. Seating overhang past 12 inches, any 2 cm slab, any island carrying a cooktop, and any retrofit deserve real engineering review rather than a rule of thumb.
  • Carrying a slab flat. Stone travels and moves on edge, in a rack or on a cart, never flat in the bed of a truck. A 400 pound island top laid flat will find its own crack over the first speed bump.
  • Square inside corners on sink and cooktop cutouts. Radiused corners, polished, are standard practice for a reason: a sharp inside corner is a stress riser, and the crack shows up weeks after you were paid.
  • Treating the silica rule as paperwork. OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1153 sets an 8-hour permissible exposure limit of 50 micrograms per cubic meter with an action level of 25. Fully implement the Table 1 controls and you get a safe harbor from exposure assessment. Shop work falls under 29 CFR 1910.1053 instead.
  • Ignoring state silica rules if you fabricate. Cal/OSHA section 5204 took effect February 5, 2025 for the artificial and natural stone industries, and from July 1, 2026 every California stone fabrication shop owner or operator must file an annual electronic attestation with Cal/OSHA.
  • Quotes with no expiration date. Slab pricing moved hard in 2026. Put a 14 or 30 day validity window and a material escalation clause on every proposal so a tariff change does not come out of your margin.
  • Filling the calendar with builder work. Residential remodel jobs commonly carry 40 to 60 percent gross margin while commercial and builder work runs 20 to 35 percent. Cheap volume feels like momentum and pays for nothing.
  • Setting on cabinets that are not flat. Shimming is part of the job, but a badly out run needs the cabinets fixed before stone goes down. The Dimension Stone Design Manual has a substrate condition tolerances section for exactly this. Stone does not flex, it cracks, and the callback is yours.

Is a countertop installation business worth it and what can you make?

Yes, if you avoid builder rates. Two kitchens a week at $1,800 of install-only labor grosses about $158,400 a year, leaving roughly $92,000 after crew days and consumables.

Run the install-only math honestly. A 45 square foot kitchen at $40 per square foot of labor bills $1,800. Each one takes a template trip and a set day, call it 1.5 crew days at $450, plus $80 in blades, adhesive and fuel, so $755 of direct cost and $1,045 left. Two a week across 44 working weeks is 88 kitchens: $158,400 of revenue and $91,960 to cover the van, insurance, phone, marketing and your own pay.

That is 58 percent, and it is not comparable to the 25 to 40 percent gross margin quoted for countertop shops. Those shops buy the slab. Labor-only revenue carries no material cost, so the percentage looks better while the dollars per job are far smaller. Compare dollars per kitchen, never percentages, when you are deciding between subcontract labor and selling the whole job.

Here is that comparison. The same 45 square foot kitchen sold direct at $85 per square foot installed is $3,825. Material and fabrication typically run 40 to 60 percent of installed price, so call it $1,913 at the midpoint. Take out the same $755 crew day and consumables and you keep $1,157 against $1,045 on the labor-only version. That is only $112 more for doing the selling, the slab approval and the warranty, which is exactly why direct work has to be priced above $85 and sold with add-ons. Add a $200 second cutout and $150 demo, subtract about $125 in fabricator and dump fees, and the same kitchen keeps $1,382.

Net margin is the number that pays you. Most countertop shops net 8 to 15 percent, and high performers clear 20 to 25 percent year after year. Getting into that top band means direct-to-homeowner work, priced add-ons, a job minimum, and tight control of remake costs, because one recut slab erases the profit on three kitchens.

When is the busy season for countertop installation?

April through August is peak, with remodel pricing running 15 to 30 percent above average. November through February is the off-season at 10 to 20 percent lower, and January brings clearance material.

Cabinet volume is your leading indicator, since the countertop is templated a week after the boxes are set.

Should you fabricate your own stone or subcontract it out?

The argument for fabricating is control and margin.
