How to Start an Irrigation Installation Business

Irrigation is the rare trade where the calendar sells for you. Frost decides when every system in town gets turned on and blown out, so two seasons a year the phone rings whether you marketed or not. A three to five zone residential system bills $1,800 to $4,500, materials are usually 20 to 30 percent of that, and every system you install becomes a customer you service twice a year for as long as they own the house. This guide covers the real startup numbers, how to price per zone, how licensing actually works state by state, and what the first 90 days should look like.

How do you start an irrigation installation business from scratch?

Register the business, check whether your state licenses irrigation work, buy general liability, get trenching and locating tools, learn backflow rules, then quote three to five zone residential systems.

This trade has a low floor and a high ceiling. You can start with a $500 to $2,000 hand tool bundle and a rented trencher, or you can finance a used vibratory plow and go straight at half acre lots. Most people who last start in the middle. Published startup capital for the trade runs $10,000 to $30,000 depending on scale, and the difference is almost entirely whether you own the digging machine or rent it.

Order matters here more than in most trades. Irrigation touches the potable water supply, which means insurance and backflow rules come before the first dig, not after. A flooded basement or a cross connection on job one is not a bad review, it is a claim.

  • Pick your lane. Residential installs of 3 to 5 zones are the volume work and pay $1,800 to $4,500 a system. Repairs, spring startups and fall blowouts are the cash flow between installs.
  • Form an LLC, get an EIN, then look up your state. Texas requires a TCEQ Licensed Irrigator for any install, design or service. Florida licenses irrigation through the DBPR. New Jersey licenses landscape irrigation contractors directly. California folds irrigation into the C-27 landscape license, required on any job over $1,000 in labor plus materials.
  • Get general liability before the first dig. Landscaping and irrigation operators average about $51 a month, roughly $610 a year, and $45 to $85 a month is the common 2026 band. Expect the number to climb once you tell the underwriter you do installs and water tie-ins.
  • Learn the backflow rules in your city, because they gate the job. A pressure vacuum breaker install runs $500 to $1,200 and the annual test is $70 to $350. Some cities charge per assembly tested and set a filing deadline, like $35 per test in Plano, Texas, or a 72 hour report window in Georgetown, Texas.
  • Buy the hand tools, rent the iron. Start with the $500 to $2,000 tool and supply bundle and a $295 per day Ditch Witch vibratory plow rental. Run the math honestly: at $295 a day, about fifteen rental days costs what a $4,500 used plow costs, so buy when you are on the machine most weeks, not before.
  • Buy a wire and valve locator early. An Armada PRO-700 runs about $650 and it is what you use to trace field wire and find a buried valve without opening test holes across somebody's lawn. Without it, repair calls turn into unpaid digging.
  • Do two full systems at cost before you quote a stranger. Your own yard and a relative's. Measure static pressure and available flow at the meter first, because flow decides how many heads go on a zone, not the shape of the yard. Learn head spacing, valve manifold layout and controller programming where a mistake is free.
  • Call 811 before every dig, every time. It is mandatory for all excavation and it is free. Hitting a gas line or a fiber drop on job one ends the business before it starts.

How much does it cost to start an irrigation installation business?

Startup capital runs $10,000 to $30,000 depending on scale. A lean start renting the trencher needs roughly $10,000, including a hand tool bundle at $500 to $2,000, insurance and licensing.

The whole spread between a lean start and an established outfit is the digging machine. Renting a walk-behind trencher costs $75 for a 4 hour block, about $280 a day on average, and $100 to $620 a day at the wide end. Owning the same class of machine used costs $4,400 to $19,900. Rent until your calendar is full enough that rental days beat a payment.

Parts are the other half. A 1,000 foot roll of 1 inch, 100 PSI irrigation poly pipe is $324.99, about $0.32 a foot. Step up to 2 inch and it is $793.99 for a 500 foot roll, about $1.59 a foot, a five times jump per foot for one size step. That single fact should shape how you design mains on a tight bid.

What licenses, certifications and insurance do you need to install irrigation?

It varies by state. Texas requires a TCEQ Licensed Irrigator for any install. Florida and New Jersey license irrigation directly. California folds it into the C-27. Liability insurance averages $610 yearly.

There is no federal license. Some states have a dedicated irrigation credential, some bury irrigation inside a landscape or contractor license, and a few leave it to cities. Treat the list below as a map and confirm with your own state board before you quote. The Irrigation Association keeps the authoritative state by state picture.

One thing is consistent everywhere: backflow prevention is regulated because your work connects a lawn to drinking water. Even in states with no irrigation license, the city usually wants a permit, a certified tester and a filed report.

  • Texas: a TCEQ Licensed Irrigator is required for any landscape irrigation install, design or service. Application $111, renewal $111 every three years, and 24 approved CE hours that cannot be banked retroactively. The exam is a six hour computer-based test covering design, hydraulics, backflow prevention and Texas rules, with a 70 percent minimum per section. Many testing centers cannot seat an exam longer than four hours, so confirm before you schedule. Approval letters take 3 to 4 weeks. The lower Irrigation Technician tier runs $916 to $2,116 all in.
  • Florida: Irrigation Specialty Contractor through DBPR and the CILB. Four years experience, two exams covering trade knowledge plus Business and Finance, fingerprinting, a background and credit check, and backflow prevention certification. Initial fees total $1,099 to $2,299. If you do not sit both exams at the same time, the second costs an extra $80. Counties and cities layer their own irrigation licenses on top of the state one.
  • New Jersey: the Board of Landscape Irrigation Contractors sits under the Department of Community Affairs. Licensure is required, you need a minimum of three years hands-on or educational experience, and the state exam uses Irrigation Association exam questions.
  • California: no standalone irrigation license. Irrigation is a subcategory of the C-27 Landscape Contractor classification. CSLB fees are $450 application plus $200 initial license for a sole owner, or $350 for a non-sole entity, with a $25,000 contractor bond on file. You need four years of documented journeyman or higher experience. The license threshold is $1,000 in combined labor and materials, raised from $500 on January 1, 2025.
  • Virginia: Class A, B and C tiers are set by contract value, with thresholds running from $10,000 up past $120,000. The tier you need depends on job size, not on the trade.
  • Certifications: Irrigation Association credentials are the industry standard. The Certified Irrigation Contractor and Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor exams cost $250 for members or $495 for nonmembers, with retakes at $200 member or $325 nonmember. Annual renewal is $75 member or $125 nonmember for one certification, plus $25 per additional one. Certified Irrigation Technician is the usual first credential for a working tech.
  • Backflow tester certification is separate and required in many jurisdictions. It is also a permanent revenue line: $70 to $350 per annual test on every system you install, for as long as you keep the customer.
  • Local permits are small but real. Blaine, Minnesota charges $60 plus a $1 state surcharge and wants the annual backflow report within 30 days. Geneva, Illinois charges a flat $100 at issuance. Backflow permit fees generally start at $50.

How much should you charge to install a sprinkler system?

Quote by the zone. Most residential zones price at $500 to $1,300 each, so a typical three to five zone system lands between $1,800 and $4,500 installed.

The zone is the unit this trade quotes in, because a zone is one valve, one wire pair, one pipe run and a set of heads. Published per zone ranges cluster at $585 to $1,340, with $250 to $500 possible only on simple, easy-dig suburban lots and $600 to $2,000 on hard digs. Additional zones added to a system you are already building run $500 to $1,000. By area, installed systems run $0.88 to $1.65 per square foot.

WORKED EXAMPLE: Marcus quotes a four zone system in Ohio on a 9,000 square foot lot with about 4,500 square feet of actual turf to water. He prices four zones at $850 each, which is $3,400, and adds a pressure vacuum breaker at $700 installed, for a $4,100 ticket. That is $0.91 per irrigated square foot, the bottom of the $0.88 to $1.65 band, so he is competitive and not cheap. Materials come to about $1,078: 800 feet of 1 inch poly pipe at $0.32 a foot is $256, twelve Rain Bird 5004-PC-SAM rotors bought in a case of 20 at $18.90 each is $227, four Hunter PGV-100 valves at about $24 each is $97, a Hunter Hydrawise X2-400 controller at $198.75, and a $300 allowance for fittings, wire, sleeving and valve boxes. That is 26 percent of the ticket, inside the 20 to 30 percent materials band. Labor is set by the benchmark: under 10 man-hours per zone means under 40 man-hours, so Marcus and one helper do two 10 hour days. The helper at $22 an hour for 20 hours is $440. Two days of Ditch Witch vibratory plow rental at $295 is $590. Direct cost is $2,108, gross profit is $1,992, and that is a 49 percent gross margin before overhead, with Marcus's own labor still inside that number.

Trenching gets billed separately when the dig is bad. Figure $4 to $12 per linear foot, higher in rocky ground or heavy clay. If you fold that into a flat per zone price on a rocky lot, the rock takes your profit.

How do you get your first irrigation customers?

Work the two forced-visit seasons. Knock the street where you are already digging, list on Google Business Profile, and trade cheap spring startups for signed annual service agreements.

Irrigation demand is not created by marketing, it is released by frost. Startups happen when the ground thaws and blowouts happen before the first hard freeze. Your job is to be findable in those two narrow windows and to convert every visit into a customer you own.

WORKED EXAMPLE: Dana spends $300 on 2,000 door hangers and walks the two subdivisions where she just finished a system, in the last week of March. Timing carries this piece, not copy, because every homeowner in a freeze region needs a startup inside the same few weeks, as soon as frost is out of the ground. Say 12 people call, under one percent, and 9 book a spring startup at $120. That is $1,080 against $300, so the run pays back three times on the first visit alone. The real return is what happens on site. She signs 5 of those 9 onto an annual agreement covering startup plus fall blowout at $240 a year, which is $1,200 of booked revenue for next season, and 3 of them add a $150 head replacement while she is standing there.

That is the whole business model in one example. The startup visit is not the product. It is a paid inspection that puts you in front of a system you did not build, with a wrench in your hand.

  • Claim and fill out a Google Business Profile with photos of open trenches, a clean valve manifold and zones running. Startup and blowout searches spike in a narrow window and they land on local results.
  • Door hang the street you are already working. You have a truck, a trench and a finished system as proof. Six doors either side of the job is the highest converting hour of your week.
  • Sell the $80 to $140 spring startup as the front door. It is a one hour visit that shows you the entire system, and it hands you the head replacements, valve failures and controller upgrades that actually pay.
  • Write a one page annual service agreement covering spring startup plus fall blowout. That turns two frost-driven visits into predictable revenue and locks the customer before someone else knocks.
  • Get on the call list of two or three landscapers and one small builder. They sell systems they do not want to install and will hand off the whole irrigation scope.
  • Offer the smart controller upgrade on every startup. It is a 1.5 to 2 hour swap at $400 to $600 installed, and in some cities a water utility rebate of up to $100 for a WaterSense certified unit closes the sale for the customer.
  • Ask for the review while the zones are still cycling in front of the homeowner. A system that visibly works is the only pitch this trade needs.
  • In July and August, when service calls go quiet, call every system you touched in spring and pre-book the fall blowout. You fill October before your competitors have printed a flyer, and you order winterization parts before the supply house runs out of them.

What tools, equipment and software do you need to install irrigation?

A trencher or vibratory plow, a wire and valve locator, pipe pulling and cutting tools, a compressor for blowouts, plus scheduling software. Rent the heavy machines in year one.

Two machine choices define this trade. A walk-behind trencher cuts an open trench and is faster in soft, open ground. A vibratory plow pulls pipe through the soil with almost no surface damage, which is what retrofit customers with an established lawn want. What should the first 90 days of an irrigation business look like?

Weeks one and two cover paperwork, insurance and licensing. Weeks three to six mean practice installs and repair calls. Weeks seven to twelve target one paid install per week.

Ninety days is enough to be legal, competent and booked, but only if you sequence it. The trade benchmark for productivity is under 10 man-hours per zone plus the tap, and a typical residential system spans 2 to 3 days: layout, trenching and pipe on day one, heads, valve assembly and wiring on day two, then test, program and cleanup on day three. Your first system will take longer. Plan for it.

One honest caveat before you use this calendar. It assumes your state lets you open. Texas requires the Licensed Irrigator credential before any install, design or service, and the approval letter alone takes 3 to 4 weeks after the six hour exam. Florida wants four years of experience and California wants four documented years for the C-27. In those states the first 90 days are spent working under a licensed irrigator and banking verifiable hours, not hanging your own sign.

Sequence it against frost, too. Starting this plan in November in a freeze region means weeks 7 to 12 land in the dead season with nothing to quote. Start the paperwork in winter so weeks 7 to 12 land on the spring startup rush.

What mistakes kill new irrigation installation businesses?

Setting heads below grade, skipping 811 locates, botching fall blowouts so zones die in April, pricing per job instead of per zone, and having no winter cash plan.

Almost every failure in this trade is a callback you do not get paid for. The install is fine on the day you leave. The defect shows up months later, in a season when you are already too busy to fix it for free.

  • Setting heads below grade. The mower deck destroys them and the homeowner reads it as a product failure instead of an install defect. You eat the warranty call and the part.
  • Mixing rotors and spray heads on the same zone. They put down water at completely different rates, so one run time either drowns half the yard or browns the other half. The customer blames your design, and the only fix is splitting the zone, which means a new valve, more wire and more pipe on your dime.
  • Rushing the fall blowout. Water left inside a solenoid freezes, expands and cracks the coil windings, which is why a botched November blowout shows up as a dead zone in April with your name on the controller.
  • Pricing per job instead of per zone. Zones run $500 to $1,300 each for a reason. Guess a lump sum and the extra valve, wire and pipe on zone five, which alone costs $500 to $1,000 to add, eats the entire profit.
  • Confusing markup with margin. Marking $64,300 of direct cost up 25 percent prices the job at $80,375, which is a 20 percent gross margin, not a 25 percent one. Do that all season and you underbid every job you win.
  • Skipping 811. One clipped gas line or cut fiber drop costs more than a whole first season earns, and it is a free phone call.
  • No winter plan. December through February is dead in the North. Businesses in this trade die in the quiet months, not the busy ones, because the summer cash was already spent.
  • Buying the machine first. A used trencher at $4,400 to $19,900 is a payment you still make in February when nothing is booked. Rent at $295 a day until rental days clearly cost more than ownership.
  • Ignoring backflow paperwork. Cities set filing deadlines as tight as 72 hours and charge per assembly tested. A missed report can void the inspection on a system you already got paid for.
  • Underinsuring. Irrigation tie-ins get underwritten closer to plumbing risk than mowing risk because of water damage and potable water exposure. A mowing-grade policy may not answer the one claim that matters.

Is an irrigation installation business worth it?

Yes, if you build recurring service work. A realistic first year is $50,000 to $100,000 gross. Experienced solo operators with an assistant can push past $250,000 at full utilization.

The margin targets in this trade are well established. Residential irrigation installation should hold a 35 to 40 percent gross profit and at least 20 percent net. Other benchmarks put gross at 40 to 50 percent and net at 10 to 20 percent, with materials at 20 to 30 percent of job cost and labor another 20 to 30 percent. If your gross margin is under 35 percent, your price sheet is wrong, not your work.

Add 45 spring startups at $110 and 60 fall blowouts at $95, which is $4,950 plus $5,700. Then 70 repair and head replacement calls averaging $180 adds $12,600. Gross revenue is $80,850, which sits inside the realistic $50,000 to $100,000 first year band. At a 40 percent blended gross margin that leaves $32,340 after materials, machine rental and helper pay. Take out roughly $10,000 for insurance at $610, truck, fuel, phone and licensing, and the owner keeps about $22,000 for the year. That is the honest first year number, and it still includes every hour of your own labor.

Do not read that as a bad business. What year one actually bought was 18 systems you now service twice a year without selling anything again. Year two starts with that book already booked.

The ceiling looks different. Two larger residential installs a week is roughly $10,000 a week, and an operator running that pace with an assistant plus a steady repair book can clear $250,000 a year. Getting there is not about installing faster. It is about owning enough serviced systems that spring and fall are booked solid before the season opens.

How seasonal is irrigation work, and how do you survive the winter?

Brutally. Phones explode at spring startup and again at fall winterization, then go quiet from December through February in the North. Annual service agreements are how the trade smooths it.

Frost sets the calendar, not your marketing budget. In the South, spring startups begin in January and February because the ground never freezes. In freeze-line regions the work starts in late February through April, once frost leaves the ground. Metro Atlanta usually opens mid March to early April. April and May are peak startup volume, and by June the booking backlog is at its worst for anyone who did not pre-book March and April inspections.

The fix everybody in the trade lands on is the annual service agreement. It converts the two visits that frost forces anyway into revenue you can count on before the season starts, and it gives you a reason to call in July instead of waiting for October.
