Over-the-air antenna installation is a low material cost, high skill trade you can start solo with a ladder, a signal meter and the right license. How do you start an antenna installation business from scratch?

Confirm whether your state requires a low voltage license, register the business, bind liability insurance covering rooftop work, buy a ladder, meter and two antenna models, then work one tight radius.

This is over-the-air TV antenna work: new installs, re-aims, storm repairs and multi-room distribution. Satellite dish work is a related but separate business with different economics, and blending the two is how new owners end up with startup numbers that are wrong by an order of magnitude.

The order below matters. The license question and the insurance question both gate your first legal job, and both take longer than buying tools. Everything after them is learnable in a weekend; those two are not.

  • Look up your state's low voltage or limited energy rules first. This is not electrical licensing, and the answer changes your whole timeline.
  • Register the entity and bind general liability before the first paid job. Tell the underwriter you work from roofs, because that is the exposure they are actually pricing.

Do you need a license to install TV antennas?

Often yes, but it is a low voltage or limited energy license, not an electrical license. California uses the C-7 classification. Some states leave the question entirely to cities and counties.

The voltage threshold is worth knowing precisely, because installers repeat it wrong at supply house counters. California's CSLB text for the C-7 Low Voltage Systems Contractor classification covers communication and low voltage systems that are energy limited and do not exceed 91 volts, and it names cable television systems and satellite dish antennas outright. Some licensing guides describe the same category as covering systems up to 95 volts. Use 91 volts when you are talking about California, and say roughly 90 volts anywhere else.

On insurance, a small low voltage contractor typically pays $900 to $2,200 a year for general liability. For comparison, electrical businesses average about $57 a month, near $684 a year, and small alarm installers with clean claims history often land near $40 a month. Structured cabling and audio-video contractors generally pay less than security or fire alarm contractors. A realistic band for a one-person antenna operation is $700 to $2,200 a year, with a roof-heavy book pushing toward the top.

What should you charge for antenna installation?

Here is a worked job. Dana has a two story house on the edge of the market and wants local channels in the living room and a bedroom. You quote a roof tripod, mast and two drops at $640. Materials run about $125 for a Winegard HD7694P with its mounting hardware, roughly 100 feet pulled off a 1,000 foot RG6 spool that cost $108.50, so about $11 of cable, two grounding blocks near $5 each, plus a splitter and compression connectors around $25. Call materials $171, which leaves $469 against roughly three hours on site, the drive, your overhead and your self-employment tax.

Now the trap. The national average for TV antenna installation is often quoted as $316, with most homeowners paying $217 to $433. But rooftop-specific installations are separately reported at $230 to $600. Those blended averages fold easy eave and attic mounts in with hard roof work, which drags the middle down. Quote $316 for a two story roof job and you are working for materials. Price the roof from the roof range.

One caution on the tier labels. The 25 to 35 foot figure quoted for mid-range mast jobs is height above grade, not free-standing mast above the roof. Anything more than about 10 feet of mast above the tripod needs guy wires at the top section, and a guyed mast is a second trip up plus three anchor points. If you quoted it as a plain mast job you just gave that labor away.

What tools and equipment do you need to install TV antennas?

A 28 foot fiberglass extension ladder, a handheld ATSC meter, tripod mount and mast, quad shield RG6, compression connectors and tool, grounding blocks, and two outdoor antenna models.

Buy fiberglass, not aluminum. You work near the service drop and you handle a metal mast, and an aluminum ladder in that position is one more conductor in your hands. That $67 spread is not where you save money.

The coax price spread confuses people. A 1,000 foot wooden spool of standard quad shield RG6 listed around $108.50, while plenum-rated CMP quad shield in the same length ran $505 to $520. The entire five times difference is the plenum rating, which you need only in commercial air-handling spaces. A residential installer buys the standard spool and terminates it with compression connectors, not hex crimps. Hex crimps let water track the shield, and a wet connector is the most common callback in this trade.

Ignore advertised mileage ratings, and teach your customers to ignore them too. The Winegard HD7694P is listed at 45 miles by Winegard, Solid Signal and Lowe's, at 65 plus miles on Amazon, and at 30 miles VHF with 25 miles UHF in one spec breakdown. Same antenna, three numbers. What decides reception is terrain, tower bearing, mount height and whether the station sits on high VHF or UHF, which is exactly what the meter tells you and the box does not.

  • Do not buy an old satellite-era Channel Master 1005IFD off the secondary market for $39 and expect it to read ATSC channels. It is a different, older instrument.
  • Carry an FM trap and an LTE filter. A strong FM or cellular transmitter nearby overloads a preamp and looks exactly like a weak-signal problem on the customer's TV.
  • Weatherproof with butyl mastic and a drip loop, not a bead of silicone squeezed into the connector. Silicone traps the moisture it was supposed to keep out.
  • A compass and a transmitter locator app are toolkit items, not nice-to-haves. Correct for magnetic declination or you will be several degrees off on every job in your market.
  • Keep a stud finder and fish tape on the truck. The wall fishing is what turns a two hour job into a four hour job.

How do you ground an antenna mast and work safely near a service drop?

Bond the mast and the coax shield back to the building grounding electrode system with a copper conductor no smaller than 10 AWG, and never raise a mast within falling distance of the service drop.

NEC Article 810 is the section to read, and it is short enough to read in an evening. Two things get bonded: the mast itself and the coax shield through a grounding block placed as close as practical to where the cable enters the building. Both land on the same grounding electrode system the electrical service uses. Driving a separate rod for the antenna is the classic shortcut and it is worse than doing nothing, because two isolated electrodes put a voltage difference across the coax running through the house.

The service drop is the part that actually kills people in this trade. A mast is a long conductor and you are holding it vertical on a roof. How do you get your first antenna installation customers?

Try a $300 flyer run and treat the response as a planning assumption, not a promise. Two thousand flyers printed and walked costs roughly $300, about $0.15 each. Plan for well under one percent response, so budget on six to ten calls and maybe three booked jobs. Pricing roof work off the national average, skipping the mast bond, hex crimping connectors that leak, backing down to an HOA, and selling a new antenna for NextGen TV.

The NextGen TV mistake is the one that costs referrals. ATSC 3.0 launched in the US in 2020 and has expanded across the major metros, broadcasters are currently required to simulcast ATSC 1.0 and 3.0 until July 2027, and tuner support across TV brands is still limited while ATSC 1.0 is universal. But the antenna does not change for ATSC 3.0. The tuner does. Prototype converter boxes were announced for 2026 with the industry targeting a set-top box under $60.
