There is no dominant brand to out-spend, which is why a competent one-van operator can win work in year one. This guide covers what the equipment really costs, what to charge per vent, where the licensing line sits, and what the first year can realistically pay.

How do you start an air duct cleaning business from zero to your first paying job?

Register the business, decide what work your state lets you touch, buy a portable system and a negative air machine, insure it, write a per-vent price list, then book neighbors before October.

This trade has an unusually clean entry path. The equipment is a single purchase, not a shop full of tools, and the core residential job needs one machine, one hose set and one operator with a camera. What separates the operators who last from the ones who fold in a year is not the machine. It is knowing exactly which parts of an HVAC system they are legally allowed to open.

Get that question answered in writing before you print a single flyer. In both states with rules specific enough to research, the license question does not turn on whether you clean ducts. It turns on whether you take something apart.

  • Register the entity and get an EIN. You need a company name on a certificate of insurance before a property manager will let you in the building.
  • Call your state licensing board and ask one question: at what point does duct cleaning become contracting here? Do not rely on a trade blog for the answer.
  • Buy the machine. A packaged portable system starts around $7,499 and includes the vacuum, the brush auger and the hose.
  • Add a HEPA negative air machine. Under the industry standard the duct has to stay under continuous negative pressure while you agitate, or the job does not count.
  • Bind general liability first. Workers comp usually only becomes mandatory once someone is on your payroll, so confirm your state's rule before you buy it solo. Combined coverage for a duct cleaning startup runs $1,000 to $3,000 a year.
  • Write a price list with three columns: per supply vent, per return vent, and a whole-home number. Then check every quote against the home's square footage.
  • Buy a push-rod inspection camera, even a $100 to $500 entry unit. Before-and-after footage sells the next job better than any ad.
  • Add dryer vent cleaning from day one. It is the natural second service, and it is what fills the summer.

What does it cost to start an air duct cleaning business?

The commonly published startup range for this trade is $10,000 to $50,000, and the single biggest fork in it is portable versus truck-mounted. That is the floor of the published range, almost to the dollar. Just be honest with yourself about what that HEPA unit is. It is the smallest one priced in this guide. The XPOWER X-3400A moves 600 CFM and the commercial NIKRO EC5000 is rated at 5,000 CFM of free air, and that gap is the whole reason commercial bids need different iron.

The top of the range is a different business. A complete truck-mount production setup including the vehicle runs $65,000 to $110,000, and some truck-mounted vacuum units alone list over $100,000. The middle path is a professional portable system at $12,000 to $25,000 plus a new cargo van at $35,000 to $50,000, for $47,000 to $75,000 all in. None of those extra dollars change what you can charge for a three-bedroom ranch. They change how much commercial duct you can move in a day.

What licenses, certifications and insurance do air duct cleaners need?

No federal license exists. The line that matters is disassembly. Cleaning through existing openings is usually unlicensed, while removing grilles, opening the air handler, or treating mold triggers a contractor license in the states researched here.

Be careful with what you read about this online. A list of seven states that supposedly license duct cleaners circulates everywhere in the trade. It comes from the EPA's own consumer booklet, and the EPA labels it in its own words as being the situation as of 1996. It is close to thirty years old and it is still quoted as if it described 2026. Do not plan around it. Call your own state board, ask them where the line sits in your state, and get the answer in writing.

Two states have rules specific enough to state precisely, and they both draw the line in the same place. In Texas, an air conditioning license is required to clean the entire air conditioning system including the inside of the air handler, its blowers, cooling coils and heaters. That same license is required to cut any access hole in ductwork and to treat for mold and mildew. The exemption is narrow and worth memorizing: duct cleaning and air quality testing may be performed without a contractor license if the work is limited to the air distribution system, meaning from the supply plenum to the supply grilles and from the return grille to the air handler intake. Same truck, same house, same afternoon. The license question turns on whether a hole gets cut.

Florida draws it at the grille. Per the state business and professional regulation department, cleaning ducts that does not require removal of the air grills does not require a license. If you are paid to clean air or heat ducts and the work requires partial disassembly of the system, such as removing the air grills, a license is required. Texas and Florida are the only two states stated precisely in this guide, on purpose. Plenty of other states run HVAC contractor licensing that may or may not reach duct cleaning depending on how that state words its own definition of HVAC work, and guessing which is how people get fined. Mold is a separate question again. It is the most common upsell in this trade, several states license mold remediators under their own credential, and your duct answer does not cover it. Ask about mold specifically, by name.

Chemical sanitizers and biocides sprayed inside a duct are a genuine compliance issue, not a footnote. Products applied in an occupied home's air path are regulated, and label restrictions on in-duct use are real. Read the product label before you buy a case, and confirm with your state what an applicator is allowed to do. This guide will not quote you a rule number, because the safe move is to get that number from the regulator rather than from a website.

  • NADCA's ASCS credential has no formal eligibility prerequisites, deliberately, so anyone can sit it. NADCA still recommends two to four years of field experience first.
  • The exam covers indoor air quality, safety, mechanical knowledge, field experience and applied practical work. Renewal takes 6 continuing education credits a year.
  • The annual maintenance fee is $95 for NADCA members. Nonmembers pay significantly more, so if you certify, price the membership alongside it.
  • ASCS is written against ACR, The NADCA Standard for Assessment, Cleaning and Restoration of HVAC Systems. The 2025 Edition was released on September 24, 2025 and supersedes the 2021 Edition.
  • General liability for air duct cleaning companies at $1 million in coverage runs $500 to $1,500 a year. There is no published workers comp figure for duct cleaning specifically. In janitorial, the closest peer class available, the median runs around $121 a month. Treat that as a placeholder and get a real quote.
  • You are working inside occupied buildings, in the air path, on someone else's mechanical equipment. That exposure is exactly why this class prices above outdoor trades.

What should you charge for air duct cleaning?

Most residential work prices per vent: $25 to $50 per supply and $40 to $75 per return. A single-system home usually lands $450 to $650. Dryer vents add $80 to $250.

Two national cost sources disagree by roughly twofold on the headline whole-home number and both are telling the truth about different jobs. HomeGuide puts whole-home duct cleaning at $450 to $1,000 with most single-system homes at $450 to $650. Angi puts it at $271 to $509 with a typical homeowner near $389. The HomeGuide range describes what a full source-removal job by a standards-following firm actually sells for. The Angi range is closer to coupon and lead-generation pricing, where the headline number covers a partial scope. Decide which business you are in before you set your price, because you cannot deliver the first at the price of the second.

Here is the arithmetic on a real house. Marcus Ellis quotes a 2,100 square foot single-system ranch with 14 supply vents and 2 return vents. At $35 per supply he is at $490. The two returns at $55 each add $110, for $600. He cross-checks that against square footage: 2,100 at $0.28 per square foot is $588, within twelve dollars of his per-vent number, so the quote is sane. He adds a dryer vent clean at the typical $140 add-on uplift and the ticket is $740. Marcus assumes for his own planning that this job takes him and one helper half a day. That is his own estimate for his own crew, not an industry norm. At $20 an hour for four hours the helper costs $80, leaving roughly $660 before fuel, insurance, the machine payment and his own time.

Returns cost more than supplies, and that single fact is where most new operators lose money. Returns are larger, they carry more loading, and they are harder to reach. A homeowner comparing two per-vent quotes without asking how returns are counted is not comparing the same job, and if you quote one flat per-vent rate across both, you have just donated the hardest part of the work. How do you get your first air duct cleaning customers?

Own the local map first. A Google Business Profile with real before-and-after camera footage, door hangers in neighborhoods with roof dryer vents, and referral deals with HVAC and appliance repair companies.

Sell the dryer vent first. It is a cheaper yes, it opens the door, and the safety case is real rather than invented. Failure to clean is the cited cause in 33 percent of dryer fires, the single largest cause category, ahead of spontaneous combustion of the clothing load at 26 percent.   • Claim the Google Business Profile before the first job. Post twenty photos: fouled return, brush in the trunk line, camera footage after.
  • Get before-and-after camera footage on every single job. This trade sells an invisible result, and video is the only proof a homeowner can actually see.
  • HVAC companies replacing a system see filthy ductwork every week and do not want to clean it. Pay a referral fee and be reachable the same day.
  • Appliance repair techs open dryers all day. They see the lint. Give them a card and a cut.
  • Property managers and landlords buy on turnover schedules, not on emotion. One relationship there can hold a slow summer together.
  • Home inspectors and realtors flag duct issues before closing. That work is urgent and rarely price shopped.
  • Target the housing stock, not the whole town. Roof-vented townhouses, homes with pets, and recent renovations are where the yes rate lives.
  • Ask for the review before you load the van. The camera footage you just showed them is the moment they feel it was worth the money.

What tools, equipment and software do you need for air duct cleaning?

A portable brush-and-vacuum system, a HEPA negative air machine, an inspection camera, and hoses and brushes sized 8 to 20 inches. Packaged systems bundle most of that from $7,499.

Buy the package rather than assembling parts. Time the launch if you can. Starting in January or February means you learn the machine, set your prices and build your supply relationships during a slow stretch, then arrive at the spring peak ready. What mistakes kill new air duct cleaning businesses?

Quoting a per-vent price without counting returns, cleaning without continuous negative pressure, treating mold in a state that licenses it separately, and buying a truck-mount before the calendar justifies it.

The technical mistake that ends companies is skipping source removal. Under ACR, The NADCA Standard, source removal means physically dislodging contaminants while simultaneously extracting them under continuous negative pressure, and it is the only methodology the standard recognizes as achieving compliance. Chemical treatment alone does not satisfy it. Air washing alone does not satisfy it. It does not matter how clean the registers look afterward. On a commercial job that is verified, cleanliness is measured by the NADCA Vacuum Test, and the pass mark is hard: net debris collected on pre-weighed filter media must not exceed 0.75 milligrams per 100 square centimeters of duct surface. You cannot argue with a lab weight.

  • Quoting one flat per-vent rate across supplies and returns. Returns run $40 to $75 against $25 to $50 and take longer. You just gave away the hard part.
  • Agitating without the system under continuous negative pressure. You are not cleaning the duct, you are relocating the contamination into the customer's living room.
  • Selling a chemical fog or an air wash as a cleaning. It does not meet the standard, and one informed customer or one commercial spec will catch it.
  • Cutting an access hole or opening the air handler in a state where that is licensed work. Same job, different legal category.
  • Taking mold remediation because it pays $500 to $2,000, without checking whether your state licenses mold remediators separately.

  • Forgetting that HEPA filters are a consumable. They load up, static pressure climbs, airflow drops, and a clogged filter quietly turns your negative air machine into an expensive fan.
  • Working without the camera. You are selling an invisible result, and without footage you are asking for trust you have not earned yet.
  • Treating summer as a vacation. Dryer vents, commercial buildings and rental turnovers all run in July.

Is an air duct cleaning business worth it?

It can be. The market is $1.1 billion and fragmented, with no firm above 5 percent share. Defensible net margin estimates run 10 to 35 percent, not the 50 to 70 percent marketing pages claim.

Be very skeptical of the margin numbers in this trade, because published figures disagree by roughly fivefold. One widely repeated claim is 50 to 70 percent net profit. That figure comes from a lead-generation page and describes gross margin on a single job, before the van, the insurance, the machine payment, the phone and your own salary. The more defensible net figures come from financial-modeling sources and land at 10 to 25 percent and 15 to 35 percent. Plan on the latter. If you outperform it, good, but do not build a loan around 60 percent.

Owner earnings show the same split. A financial-modeling source puts owner-operator annual earnings at $50,000 to over $150,000. A marketing-oriented source claims $75,000 to $250,000 as a beginner. The lower range is the credible one for a genuine first year, and no source in this research distinguished year one from steady state at all, so treat any first-year promise as unverified.

Where the real upside sits is commercial. Marcus quotes a 6,000 square foot medical office at $0.45 per square foot, which is $2,700 for one building. That single job equals four or five whole-home residential tickets at $600, and it comes with a schedule the property manager wants to repeat. Commercial work is far less standardized than residential, so it takes longer to quote and it takes verification seriously. That is exactly why fewer one-van operators chase it, and exactly why it is available.

  • Job counts above are your planning assumption, not an industry benchmark. No reliable jobs-per-day figure exists for this trade, so build your own from your first thirty days.
  • At $137,000 of revenue, a 15 to 35 percent net margin is $20,550 to $47,950 before you pay yourself a wage out of it.
  • Operator-side revenue per job is quoted three different ways in the trade: $150 to $800, $300 to $500, and $400 to $1,200. The spread is scope, not skill.
  • Technician wages run $18.31 to $28 an hour depending on which aggregator you believe, a 53 percent gap on the same job title. Get local quotes before you model a second tech.
  • The number of firms in this trade grew 5.27 percent in a year while the market grew 2.8 percent. More competitors than growth means the price shoppers are getting cheaper offers every year. Compete on scope.

When is air duct cleaning busiest during the year?

Spring and fall are the peaks, and October is the busiest month of the year. Summer and mid-winter are slow, because homeowners book when the system switches between heating and cooling.

The seasonality here is driven by the thermostat, not the weather. Demand spikes in early spring and late fall because that is when the HVAC system changes modes and the homeowner starts thinking about it. Cleaning also prepares the system for the heavy cooling and heating seasons that follow, and the job goes faster and disturbs the occupants less in a shoulder season when the system is off or barely running.

The slow months are summer and mid-winter, and they are where new operators quit. Do not idle them. Dryer vents do not care what season it is, and their fire risk argument works in July. Commercial buildings, rental turnovers and property manager contracts also run on their own schedules rather than on the residential thermostat. Nobody has published a reliable peak-to-trough revenue percentage for this trade, so measure your own swing in year one and staff to it in year two.

How do you compete with cheap duct cleaning coupons?

Do not match the coupon. Quote a written scope: supply count, return count, and what verification you provide. The two national cost sources differ twofold precisely because they are pricing different jobs.

So put the difference on paper. Your estimate names the supply count, the return count, the number of systems, and whether the trunk lines are included. Then show what verification means. Under the industry standard the only recognized method is source removal, contaminants physically dislodged and simultaneously extracted under continuous negative pressure, and on verified commercial work the pass mark is 0.75 milligrams of debris per 100 square centimeters of duct surface. Most homeowners have never heard any of that. Two minutes of camera footage and a written scope is a better weapon than a discount.

Know your standard's edition too. ACR, The NADCA Standard, 2025 Edition was released September 24, 2025 and replaced the 2021 Edition. It added coverage of fuel-powered equipment and negative air pressure requirements, and it codifies both the Surface Comparison Test and the NADCA Vacuum Test as verification methods. Anyone still quoting the 2021 edition on a commercial bid is a year behind, and a facilities manager reading specs will notice.

  • Never advertise a price that requires an upsell to be profitable. It trains the customer to expect the upsell and trains you to resent the job.
  • Publish your per-supply and per-return rates. Transparency is the whole differentiator against a teaser price.
  • Count the systems before you quote. A two-system home is two jobs, and finding out on site is your loss, not the customer's.
  • Show the camera footage before and after. It converts better than any discount and it is the one thing a coupon operator will not slow down to do.
  • Bid commercial to the standard by name. Facilities managers buy the specification, not the lowest number.
  • If a customer only wants the coupon price, sell them the dryer vent instead and keep the relationship.
