Radon mitigation is one of the cheapest trades to enter that still charges four figures a job. There is no excavator and no crane, and the biggest rig on the job site is a rotary hammer you can rent. Your two real capital items are a continuous radon monitor and a vehicle, and both can start used.

What licenses, certifications and insurance does a radon mitigator need?
There is no federal license. Ten states run their own credential, including Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Everywhere else, NRPP or NRSB certification is the standard, plus general liability and errors and omissions cover.
Requirements vary a lot by state, so verify with your own state radon program before you spend a dollar. About 20 states have some form of radon credentialing program, and ten of those require a credential administered by the state itself. In the rest, an NRPP or NRSB certification is the de facto license, and it is what home inspectors and real estate agents will ask to see.
The work itself is held to ANSI/AARST SGM-SF-2023, the Soil Gas Mitigation Standard for Existing Homes, which took effect December 1, 2023. It covers residential structures no more than three stories above grade with no more than four attached dwelling units on one contiguous foundation. Bigger buildings fall under the companion SGM-MFLB standard. Read the standard you are certifying under, not a summary of it.
Carry both general liability and errors and omissions. General liability covers the hole you drilled through the slab. E and O covers the claim that your measurement or your system design was wrong, which in a trade built on pCi/L readings is the exposure that actually bites. Specialty programs from OREP, Morency and Associates, NRSB and the Indoor Environments Association all write this trade specifically.

What should you charge for radon mitigation?
Most residential systems sell for $800 to $2,500, with the typical basement job landing at $1,000 to $1,500. Fan replacements run $300 to $600 installed. Crawlspace work prices higher, at $1,500 to $4,000.
Price the system, not the hour. Homeowners compare radon quotes the way they compare water heaters, so a flat installed price with the post-mitigation retest included beats an hourly rate every time. Sub-slab depressurization is the default on slabs and basements and covers the large majority of residential jobs, so that is the number you will quote most.
Here is a worked example. Take a 1,600 square foot ranch with a poured basement and a test result of 6.8 pCi/L, well over the EPA action level of 4 pCi/L. You quote $1,500 for a single suction point sub-slab system. A standard way to split that price is $525 piping and core drill, $375 fan and vent stack, $300 labor, $180 retest and permit, and $120 sealing and exterior cladding. Your actual hard cost inside that $375 fan line is about $142 for a RadonAway RP145C plus the stack material, so most of that line is margin. If the house has a second foundation section, add $400 for the extra suction point and the job goes out at $1,900 for maybe two more hours on site.
One warning on the low end. Do not compete with the roughly $500 in materials a homeowner spends on a DIY system. They are not buying pipe, they are buying a certified system, a retest that proves it worked, and a warranty. If you price like a DIY kit you will make nothing on the callbacks.
