How to Start a Finish Carpentry Business
Finish carpentry is the trade where the customer sees every decision you make. Base, casing, crown and doors are the last things installed and the first things a buyer looks at, which is why base and casing bills at $5.70 to $9.00 a linear foot and why setting the same prehung door is worth $40 to $50 as a tract builder's sub and $400 to $800 on a remodel. This guide covers the real startup math, what to charge per foot and per door, whether to supply material or bid labor only, how the calendar actually runs through the year, and what the first 90 days should look like.
How do you start a finish carpentry business step by step?
Check whether your state licenses the work, register the business, buy a miter saw and two nailers, bind liability insurance, write a linear foot price list, then get one builder or remodeler to try you.
Nothing on this list takes a loan or a shop. The gate is not money, it is the first ten rooms. Bill a stranger before you have coped a run of base into an out-of-square corner and you will spend your own evening fixing a wall that was never straight, for free.
The order matters more than the speed. Price list before first quote. Practice rooms before first invoice. One good referral source before any advertising, because in this trade a single remodeler or custom builder can fill more calendar than a month of paid clicks.
- Check the license threshold where you work before you spend a dollar. It swings enormously: Texas has no state license at all, North Carolina lets you work under $40,000 without one, and Oregon has no threshold, so the first job needs a license and a $25,000 bond.
- Set up the legal side. LLC or sole proprietorship, EIN, business bank account, and a call to your city or county about a local business license.
- Bind general liability before you set foot on a jobsite. Budget $85 to $150 a month, closer to $200 a month in California.
- Buy the core kit: a 12 inch dual-bevel sliding compound miter saw, a 16 gauge angled finish nailer, an 18 gauge brad nailer, a cordless drill and impact driver, a 6 foot level, a laser and a coping saw. The track saw waits until a built-in pays for it.
- Trim three rooms for free. Your own house, a parent, a friend mid-remodel. Time yourself and photograph every finished corner.
- Write the price list before you quote anything. Base and casing per linear foot, crown per linear foot plus a per corner charge, doors per unit, built-ins by the job. Decide on that same page whether you bid labor only or supply the material too.
- Open an account at a lumberyard or millwork house, not just a big box. You need a real supplier the week you get a real job, not the week after.
- Book the first paid job, then get the photos. A finished-room photo library is the only portfolio this trade respects.
How much does it cost to start a finish carpentry business?
A miter saw at $449 and a first year of general liability at about $1,020 is $1,469 you cannot avoid. Add nailers, a laser and hand tools and a lean start lands in the low thousands.
Start from what you can actually price. A DeWalt DWS779 12 inch dual-bevel sliding compound miter saw runs $449 at a big box and $499 at a hardware chain, and a first year of general liability at $85 a month is $1,020. That is $1,469 before job one. The track saw is the first real spending decision, not a requirement: a Makita SP6000J1 kit with the 55 inch rail is $385 against $669 for the Festool TS 55 FEQ-F-Plus that makes the same cut, a $284 difference on a tool you will not reach for until your first run of prefinished ply.
Two costs get missed. The first is licensing where it applies, which is $75 in North Carolina but $650 in California board fees before you even price a $25,000 bond. The second is material float. If you supply trim and doors on a mid-size house you can be out $3,000 or more in cash for 30 to 60 days on a markup of 10% to 15%, which is a bigger working capital problem than any tool on this list.
Prices on the rest of the kit swing hard by retailer and by promotion, and deal-tracker sites publish short-window promo prices that are not shelf prices. Quote nailers, compressors, lasers, stands and clamps locally rather than trusting a number off the internet. What does not swing is the buying order: miter saw, nailers, laser, track saw, everything else. The van, the second saw and the shop come out of profit, not out of savings.

Do you need a license or insurance to do finish carpentry?
There is no national finish carpentry license. Rules run from none at all in Texas to Oregon, where any job needs a license and a $25,000 bond. Liability insurance runs $85 to $150 monthly.
The spread between states is bigger than most carpenters expect, and it decides how you start. Texas licenses no general contractor or carpenter at any dollar amount. North Carolina only requires a general contractor license at $40,000 and up, and the Limited license that covers single projects to $750,000 costs $75 to apply for and $75 a year to renew. Oregon sits at the other end with no threshold at all, so a Residential General Contractor endorsement at $400 for two years plus a $25,000 bond is required before the first $400 door job is legal.
California is the one state with a classification written for this trade. C-6, Cabinet, Millwork and Finish Carpentry, covers cutting and joining wood into cabinets, sashes, doors and trims and installing them. AB 2622 raised the unlicensed exemption from $500 to $1,000 per project effective January 1, 2025, and that $1,000 counts labor and materials together, so one prehung door with casing can cross it. Above the line the CSLB wants $450 to process the application plus $200 for a sole owner's two year license, which is $650 in board fees, on top of a $25,000 contractor bond.
Two traps sit underneath the state line. The first is the county. Tennessee requires a state contractor license at $25,000 and up, but a separate Home Improvement license at just $3,000 in nine adopted counties including Davidson, Knox, Hamilton, Rutherford and Shelby, so the same carpenter is licensed on one side of a county line and not the other. The second is the bond premium. A $25,000 bond does not cost $25,000, a surety charges an annual premium against it, and we could not source current premium rates for any state, so get a real quote instead of assuming a number. Florida is the state to be most careful with: non-structural carpentry is widely reported as needing no state license, but the structural line and Florida's county licensing are exactly where people get caught, and we could not verify either.
One federal rule applies in every state and lands squarely on this trade. The EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting rule covers work that disturbs painted surfaces in housing or child-occupied facilities built before 1978. Prying old baseboard and casing off a plaster wall in a 1950s house is exactly that work. The company has to hold EPA Lead-Safe firm certification and a certified renovator has to run the job, which means contained work areas and cleanup verification before you leave. Several states run their own approved version of the program instead, so check your state as well as the EPA.
- No national credential exists for finish carpentry. State contractor licensing is the thing that actually gates you, and carpentry is almost never its own license outside California's C-6.
- Call the board and the county yourself. Fees change by legislative session and a wrong threshold ends in a fine, so no article should be your final answer.
- Electrical, plumbing and HVAC need a trade license regardless of job size in essentially every state. If a built-in needs an outlet moved, sub it out.
- Arizona is the friendliest bond structure of the licensed states: the bond starts at $4,250 and scales with the annual volume you declare, instead of a flat $25,000 on day one.
- Pre-1978 houses trigger the federal EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting rule. Pulling old trim disturbs lead paint, so the firm needs EPA Lead-Safe certification and a certified renovator on the job.
- General liability: budget $85 to $150 a month, roughly $1,020 to $1,800 a year. California contractors commonly sit near $200 a month. Sole proprietors price well under the all-business average.
- Ignore the $14 a month advertised rate. It is a marketing floor, not a working carpenter's premium.
- Workers' compensation: a true solo operator is often exempt, but general contractors routinely require a certificate before letting a sub on site. Ask the GC what they require before you assume you can skip it.
- Tool and equipment coverage is worth pricing separately. A finish carpenter's van contents add up fast once the saws, nailers and track are in it.

What should you charge for finish carpentry?
Base and casing bill at $5.70 to $9.00 per linear foot, crown at $4 to $6 plus $25 a corner, and setting a prehung door at $120 to $350.
Take Dana, quoting a paint-grade remodel on a 1,900 square foot house. This is a labor quote and the homeowner is buying the material, which she puts in writing on the first line. She measures 620 linear feet of base and casing and prices it at $8.00 per linear foot, which is $4,960. Nine prehung interior doors get set at $250 each, which is $2,250. Crown goes into two rooms: 96 linear feet at $5.00 is $480, plus 14 corners at $25 each is $350, so crown comes to $830. Her labor number is $8,040. She figures ten working days on site, so that is $804 a day, or about $100 an hour, which sits at the top of the $65 to $105 an hour that trim repair bills at. If the client switches to stain grade, she adds 30% to 50% and the same house becomes $10,452 to $12,060.
The per corner charge is the part beginners skip and it is the part that decides whether small rooms make money. Crown at $4 to $6 a linear foot plus $25 a corner is how experienced trim carpenters keep a cut-heavy room from eating the profit. A tray ceiling in a 12 by 14 bedroom can carry more corners than a whole great room, and a straight per foot quote pays you the same for both.
Stain grade is a different price because it is a different job. Grain has to match, splices come more often, and every joint has to be tighter because there is no caulk and no filler to hide behind. Paint grade forgives a 1/32 inch gap. Stain grade shows it, permanently. Thirty to fifty percent more is the standard premium, and some carpenters price stain grade at half again the paint grade number.

Should you supply the trim material or bid labor only?
Bid labor only when you can. Trim material carries only 10% to 15% markup, so supplying it grows the invoice without growing the profit much, and you front the cash for 30 to 60 days.
Material is cheap relative to your labor, which is exactly why supplying it does so little for you. Primed MDF baseboard runs about $1.00 to $3.50 a linear foot, primed finger-joint pine sits around $2.17 to $3.42, and a milled poplar profile from a millwork supplier starts near $5.72 a foot for casing and $8.69 for colonial base. Note that gap: cost guides quote poplar far lower than a real supplier does, most likely because they are pricing plain 1x stock rather than a milled profile, so use the supplier number when you quote hardwood.
Run Dana's house both ways and the point lands. Labor only, she invoices $8,040. Supply and install, she buys 620 linear feet of primed finger-joint at about $2.75 a foot for $1,705, nine hollow core prehung doors at about $148 each for $1,332, and 96 feet of MDF crown at about $2.00 for $192, a material cost of $3,229. At the 15% top of the trim markup range she bills that at $3,713 and the job becomes $11,753. The invoice grew by $3,713 and her gross profit grew by $484. She also fronted $3,229 in cash, owns the damage and the returns, and eats the delay when a door arrives bowed.
Doors are the clearest ladder to quote off. A builder-grade hollow core slab runs about $61 to $74, the same door prehung runs about $148, a solid core prehung starts near $180, and a composite two panel is about $345. Those are big box retail prices, and a pro buying on a millwork account pays differently, though no source we could reach publishes contractor door pricing. When you do supply, price the tier the customer picked, not the tier you assumed.
The markup ladder is the part worth memorizing. Trade press puts 10% to 15% as about all the market will bear on trim material, standard stock material across the trades sits near 20%, and custom-milled or special-order trim justifies 30% to 40% because you carry the sourcing time and the material is not returnable. Meanwhile self-performed labor carries 35% to 50%. That asymmetry is the whole argument: labor-only work protects the margin percentage, supply-and-install raises total dollars per job and dilutes the percentage.
- Put who supplies material on the first line of every quote, above the price. Most disputes in this trade are about that one line.
- If you do supply, take a deposit that covers the material before you order it. Never float a customer's trim package on your own card.
- Custom-milled and special-order profiles are the exception worth supplying, at 30% to 40%, because the sourcing is real work and nobody else wants to own it.
- Labor is 40% to 70% of what a trim job costs, so the labor line is where your margin lives no matter which way you bid it.
- Open a contractor account at a lumberyard or millwork house. Accounts come with a dedicated price schedule, itemized monthly statements that make job costing easy, a credit limit and priority on delivery.
- Millwork is specifically one of the categories where dealers have room to discount, along with laminated beams, special locksets and cabinets. That is exactly what you buy, so ask for the number.
- The best price goes to the customer who commits volume and pays the statement on time every month. There is no trick beyond those two things.
- Big boxes have spent years segmenting pros away from DIY buyers, and builders largely buy elsewhere. Yards also carry far more selection, since almost everything they stock is wood.
- Do not assume the yard is cheaper. Sources contradict each other on which way the price difference runs, so price the same profile at both and find out for yourself.
- MDF is cheapest and hates water. On a slab, in a basement, or anywhere near a bath, price the upgrade rather than warranty a swollen baseboard.

How do you get your first finish carpentry customers?
Get in front of remodelers, custom builders, cabinet shops and painters, because they hand out repeat work. Homeowner leads come from door hangers, Google Business Profile photos and finished-room pictures.
Run the numbers on a first push, and be honest about what print actually does. A $300 door hanger run through two neighborhoods of 1990s two-story houses needs exactly one crown job to pay back close to four times over, because whole-house crown jobs run $609 to $2,123 with reported averages of $1,173 to $1,302. What nobody tells you is that a cold drop usually returns nothing the first time. Budget $900 for three drops on the same two streets over six weeks, because the third hanger is the one people call. One $1,200 crown job across all three drops is what makes the $900 worth spending, and you keep the addresses either way. The quieter return is the bigger one. A remodeler who hands you six prehung doors a month at $600 each with new casing is $3,600 a month, and that relationship cost you a phone call and one clean job.
Photos are the portfolio. Not process shots, finished corners: a coped inside corner on a run of base, a crown return, a mitered casing head, a stain-grade splice you cannot find. Take them square, in daylight, with the room clean. Homeowners cannot judge your joinery, but they can tell whether the picture looks like a magazine, and builders absolutely can judge your joinery.
- Remodeling contractors first. They already have the customer, they need trim done, and they will call you again next month if you show up and clean up.
- Cabinet shops and closet companies. They install boxes and need someone for the crown, the light rail, the fillers and the toe kick.
- Painters. They see every unfinished trim job in town and they are asked for a carpenter constantly.
- Custom home builders, one at a time. A single builder can hand you a whole trim package, but expect to prove yourself on one house first.
- Real estate agents and stagers. Pre-listing trim, crown in the main rooms and door replacement are quick sales because the seller is spending to earn more.
- Google Business Profile with 20 finished-room photos and real reviews. This is where the homeowner who searched crown molding actually lands.
- Door hangers on 1980s and 1990s subdivisions with builder-grade colonial casing and 2 1/4 inch base. Those houses are the crown and upgraded-trim market.
- Neighborhood groups and local Facebook pages, but only with photos. Text-only posts do nothing in a visual trade.
What tools and equipment do you need for finish carpentry?
A 12 inch dual-bevel sliding miter saw and two nailers, 16 gauge angled and 18 gauge brad, do most of the work. A track saw only earns its keep once you build in cabinetry.
The nailer split is the one thing to get right on day one. A 16 gauge angled finish nailer, like the DeWalt DCN660, drives 1 1/4 inch to 2 1/2 inch fasteners and is the gun for crown, casing and baseboard. An 18 gauge brad nailer, like the DeWalt DCN680, drives 5/8 inch to 2 1/8 inch brads and handles the light and delicate stock where a 16 gauge would split the piece. Buying only one of the two means you will either blow out shoe mold or leave crown hanging on brads.
The track saw question is real money and it is not a day one question. Pure trim work is a miter saw trade. The track saw shows up when you start breaking down sheets of prefinished ply for built-ins and closet systems, and at that point a Makita SP6000J1 kit with a 55 inch rail is about $385 against about $669 for a Festool TS 55 FEQ-F-Plus, a gap of roughly $280 to $300 for the same straight cut. Start with the Makita. Spend the difference on a good 80 to 100 tooth finish blade and a coping saw, because your joints come from those two, not from the badge on the track saw.
Buy the dust and hearing protection with the saw, not later. Cutting MDF base and casing on a miter saw indoors is the dustiest thing you will do all week, and MDF dust is fine enough to hang in the air of a closed-up house for hours after you stop cutting. Run the saw with a shop vac on the port, wear an N95 or better, and put muffs on before the first cut, because a 12 inch slider inside a bare drywall room is loud enough to cost you hearing over a career.

What mistakes kill new finish carpentry businesses?
Quoting per linear foot without counting corners, taking builder sub rates on remodel work, pricing stain grade like paint grade, mitering inside corners instead of coping, and quoting a house you never walked.
- Quoting straight linear feet in a cut-heavy room. Crown at $4 to $6 a foot plus $25 a corner exists because corners are where the time goes. A small tray-ceiling room can have more corners than lineal feet of profit.
- Carrying builder sub pricing into remodel work. Setting a prehung for $40 to $50 is tract production pricing on repeated plans. The same door in an out-of-square 1950s opening is a $400 to $800 job.
- Pricing stain grade like paint grade. Grain matching, extra splices and tighter joints are 30% to 50% more work, and there is no filler to hide behind.
- Mitering inside corners instead of coping them. Pros specify coped inside a price quote because coping costs real time and holds when the house moves. A mitered inside corner opens.
- Quoting from a plan or a phone call. Out-of-square corners, bowed walls and floors that fall an inch across a room are all discovered on site, and all of them are yours once you have given a number.
- Supplying material without a deposit. A mid-size house can be $3,229 of trim and doors out of your pocket, carried for 30 to 60 days, on a markup of 10% to 15%. That is a cash flow problem, not a profit center.
- Marking material up like labor. Push trim past about 15% and the customer prices it themselves at the same store you did.
- No minimum charge. A one hour trim repair across town bills $85 and eats half a day once you add the drive, the supply stop and the setup. Set a half day minimum and quote the drive separately.
- Starting a builder job without scope in writing. Which rooms, which profiles, how many doors, who supplies material, and whether shoe mold and closet shelving are in or out. Everything left unwritten becomes yours.
- Signing without asking what percentage is held back and when it is released. Holdbacks are normal in construction. An amount that is not in the contract is not.
- Not covering floors and not photographing rooms before you start. You are the last trade in, so any scuff at the walkthrough is assumed to be yours and comes off the invoice as a back-charge.
- Tearing old trim off a pre-1978 house with no lead-safe certification. The EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting rule covers exactly this work, a homeowner complaint is all it takes to start it, and the penalty is federal.
- Taking on electrical for a built-in. Outlets, sconces and undercabinet lighting need a licensed trade in essentially every state, no matter how small the job.
- Crossing the license threshold without checking. In California, a $1,000 project including materials is the line, and one door with casing can pass it. In Oregon there is no line at all.
- Chasing homeowner one-offs when a single remodeler could feed you monthly. Every homeowner job costs a new sale. A trade relationship costs one.
Is a finish carpentry business worth it and what can you make?
Most carpenters reported $50,000 to over $200,000 in gross revenue, about a third of them solo. No published figure exists for a first year specifically, so treat any number as a target.
Start with the number you are trying to beat. The median carpenter earned $60,580 a year in the May 2025 federal wage data, across roughly 670,090 employed carpenters, and in the prior year's figures the bottom tenth earned under $38,760 while the top tenth cleared $98,370. Those figures count wage and salary employees only, so they leave out the roughly one in three carpenters who work for themselves. Read $60,580 as what your own labor is worth on the open market, which makes it a cost of your business, not its revenue.
For revenue itself the honest answer is that the data is thin. The broadest figure available is a 2021 survey in which most carpenters reported gross revenue between $50,000 and over $200,000, with about a third running solo, and that is now five years old. Nobody publishes a first year number for a solo trim carpenter, so anything you see presented as one was built from arithmetic. You can build your own the same way, as a target rather than a forecast: at the $65 to $105 an hour trim work bills at, eight billable hours is $520 to $840 a day, and 130 billed days out of roughly 250 working days is $67,600 to $109,200. Whether you hit it depends almost entirely on how fast you land a repeat builder or remodeler.
Margin is where the trade gets realistic. Trade contractors broadly run 25% to 45% gross, specialty contractors sit lower at 15% to 25% because the cost base is labor and moves with wages, and specialty trade net margins land around 6.9% to 8.5%. A small carpentry business targeting 10% to 20% net after everything is aiming at the right thing. Labor-focused service trades reach 35% to 55% gross, which is one more argument for keeping material out of your bid where the customer will allow it.
The ceiling with a crew is arithmetic, so treat it that way. Two carpenters trimming whole houses at $5.70 to $9.00 per linear foot, on a house with 1,200 linear feet of base and casing, bill $6,840 to $10,800 per trim package. Two packages a month is $13,680 to $21,600, or roughly $164,000 to $259,000 a year, which lands at the top of that reported revenue distribution. Two a month sounds slow for two people and it is deliberate, because the calendar loses days to quoting, punch lists and the week a builder's schedule slides. That is revenue, not income. What actually sets the ceiling is which market you sell into: the same physical task, setting an interior prehung door, bills $40 to $50 as a tract builder sub and about $1,100 on a high-end custom remodel. Read the low end correctly before you copy it. At the 2 to 3 hours a door takes in an existing house, $45 is under $20 an hour, so that rate only works on repeated plans where a hanger is well under an hour per unit. Treat the builder column as a number to verify on your own two houses, not a rate to accept.

When is finish carpentry busiest during the year?
Remodel demand peaks May through July and goes quiet in winter. Finishing trades report open slots in the fall. New construction runs opposite, because trim-out lands months after the spring start peak.
There are two demand curves and they do not line up, which is the good news. Remodeling peaks May through July, summer is when home improvement companies stretch their lead times, and the builders' association names May as National Home Remodeling Month, so booking activity concentrates right there. The low season is the extreme winter months, when contractors are more widely available and homeowners are not calling. If your whole business is homeowner remodel work, your year has a hole in it from December through February.
The most specific finding in this trade is about fall, not winter. Framers and roofers are busiest spring and summer, but finishing trades, painters, tile installers and trim carpenters, tend to have more open slots in the fall. That makes sense: the summer remodel rush is finished, and the houses that started in spring have not reached trim-out yet. Fall is the soft spot to plan around, and it is also the best time to take the pre-listing trim, door replacement and punch work that fills days without a big sale.
The new construction side runs on the opposite clock, and the math is worth doing. Housing starts in unadjusted data peak in April, at about 32.8% above the slowest month, and December and January are the slowest. A single family house took about 7.5 months from start to completion in 2025 and 7.7 months in 2024, with roughly another 1.4 months from permit to start. Trim-out sits near the end of that sequence, so April starts reach you around late November. That is arithmetic on two published facts and not an observed trim-out index, so treat it as a reason to expect builder work in late fall and winter rather than a guarantee.
Where you work changes the shape. In 2024 the average build ran 13.7 months in the Middle Atlantic and 13.1 in New England, against 10.8 on the Pacific, 10.0 in the Mountain states, 9.4 in the East North Central and 7.8 in the South Atlantic, the shortest in the country. Northern states also see construction drop off sharply in winter. Nobody publishes a month by month demand index for finish carpentry, so what you have is a shape, not a curve: keep both a builder and a remodel client alive so the two calendars cover each other's gaps.
